Yes until more testing is done on other continents, but ignorance is bliss
As usual it takes a couple of celebrity’s or politicians to get the
ball rolling!
I was wondering, if you could quarantine used masks, by say leaving them for 30 days, so that the vitus can just die by itself. This way you could end up needing much fewer of them.
In this video Dr. Bones argues that N95 masks can be reused:
Supposedly you can desinsect them by putting them to a dry oven for 30 min (which makes sense).
Personally I think that the reason WHO told everyone not to use mask if you are not treating an infected patient or being a patient yourself is because they foresee the shortage problem for the medical staffs to access to the needed mask. Governments should first secure adequate supply of masks for medical staffs first and make sure all hospitals don't fall short on masks. The govt has all the power and resource to reach mask producers first. Pity all governments are shortsighted and fail to take immediate action at the first place. Personally again, I think advise to not wear mask is "a wrong advise for protecting the spread."
In real world, when time comes, some places will need to reuse the mask. Field doctors who live in the situation not sitting at clean clinic understand this. There are guidelines on what type of mask could qualify for reuse and how to sanitize them for reuse. Guidelines were given by doctors who are as intellectual as any in the rest of the world. Silly? No. Supply will be very limited. And many people are at poverty or in some small margin above poverty unlike me and members here who can afford a $10,000 equipment to pleasure our ears. So there is a hard real world outside this forum.
Mask is cultural? Yes. Partially cultural. But so as rap music 35 years ago with RUN DMC. It will not be perceived as cultural after international community becomes familiar and accustomed to it. After this corona thing goes away, the world wont feel awkward seeing people wearing mask in public. And feeling of cultural will be less. It could be come a great habit as I said before too. There could be less cases of influenza because people start to weak mask everytime they get sick.
Short supplies in some countries dictate different policies.
Tang is right; priorities are for the doctors and nurses who are @ the frontline of saving lives.
If they die more people die too. And that is our reality here.
My post 950 yesterday reported the different approach being taken by the UK Govt.
It has very quickly crumbled. Sporting bodies like the Football League decided earlier today to suspend pretty well all matches to until April 3. Similar response in other sports.
It is reported tonight that at least 17 universities are proposing to close or stop physical classes. Details still emerging.
Govt to put to Parliament emergency legislation next week to give itself a wide range of powers to deal with the outbreak. Details just beginning to leak.
Doesn't appear to be any major immediate move to close schools and no great demand for them to do so. Children don't appear to be major spreaders and importance of maintaining working by health service worker parents seems well supported.
People experiencing symptoms of Covid 19 advised to stay at home and only seek help including testing if symtoms continue or worsen.
Various organisations cancelling events on a large scale and hotels and leisure industries being badly hit. Airlines seem to be the worst affected and British Airways being badly hit and warning they will have to lay staff off.
Big fall off in visits to shops etc and commuter trains carrying very considerably reduced numbers of passengers as so many work from home.
There does seem now to be a widespread recognition among the population that this is something very big and likely to last for a substantial period of time. With the possible exception of London masks don't so far seem to be a very big issue.
No signs of general panic but growing demands for better information from the Govt. Opposition parties being generally supportive but voicing responsible doubts about particular aspects of the Govt's response.
No areas have been quarantined or locked down, Public health contact chasing appears to have been done very well and has limited the spread. No significant geographical hotspots for the virus so far.
Hopefully those positives will continue but if the outbreak becomes dramatically worse in the next week or two there will be a much more serious test of the UKs ability to cope.
And they wear masks in those very polluted China and India cities; goes with the territories.
Mexico City is another place good to wear a mask...I know for a fact.
Even in Montreal in the Summer close to big highways, and driving through industrial oil refineries.
I know for a fact.
Well when the virus hits home so to speak, then it gets real. They might close all schools in Reno Monday, they closed four today. The CVS pharmacist told me that everything is flying off the shelves....a record day in sales as people are in panic,

I have been to both Mexico City and China in the past 3 months (China - December, Mexico City - mid February). I haven't noticed anyone wearing one in Mexico and VERY few in Kanton.
Now basicly everyone wears a mask in China. In Wuhan 100% of people do.
My girlfriend passed out in Mexico City due to pollution, back in the 70s.
And I was weak. No, people weren't wearing masks, but next time I visit I'll bring few.
If I'm still alive ...
Some cities are killers. EV is the way to go. Then masks would be used mainly for epidemics and pandemics. And the docs and nurses in hospitals wouldn't run out in top developed countries.
So here's some interesting stuff going on in Bellingham area of Washington. (North of Seattle, LOTS of commuters around the general area all the way down into Seattle)
They have some confirmed cases on the Western University campus. The employees that can work from home are not allowed to work from home.
The medical facilities have turned away dozens of people that have all the symptoms and have tested negative for the flu, but where not tested for cov-19.
The worst part? Canadians are buying out all the stores. Even restaurant supply stores that most people don't know about are empty. The locals can't buy food. There are reports of Canadians literally pushing people out of their way to get stuff. They also clog up a lot of the gas stations.
Well we all deal with this in different ways. I try to offset the dour mood here with some humor. It’s not like I don’t have skin in the game as my mother is frail and my wife is immuno-compromised with Sjogren’s Disease. Fortunately the university closing its campus has brought one daughter home today and the other will be here full time as her school closes. For how long? Weeks? Months?
This situation is unprecedented in the mid-west as we are relatively immune to direct global influences, just the after affect. We will see three direct affects here - on those vulnerable to the disease, the economy, and the shut-down of services/events. As our myopic leaders struggle to first, get re-elected, then do something passable to deal with the rammifications, the rest of us are wondering how far our systems will devolve before we recover. Hoarding is the first sign of dysfunction.
Masks have been a staple in my industrial life. Are they now a sign of the times? I was in San Francisco during their wild fires. Couldn't breathe on the streets without one. Same thing in Anchorage last year with their fires in the 85 degree heat. Previous and current airborne diseases now. Fortunately our relative lack of population density allows us more space between than other large cities or countries.
Stability is the key to prosperity, not denial. I’m wary of this trend.
Nobody knows how long this will last Tuckia, maybe couple months?
Probably more I'm afraid.
I just watched the local news, Canada. People are panicking too with toilet paper.
This toilet paper thing is simply totally nuts.
And they overflow medical clinics to get tested. They should stay home instead if they want to help themselves and others.
I think it's going to get worse ...
I think I'm going to stay away from the local news...too loco for my taste.
This is so cool. The Italians have figured out the self isolation thing musically. Watch the first and second videos in that link, Sicily and Siena, lovely:
