Modern speakers vs Vintage speakers

Looking at the ellipticor some more my vote would got to the Podszus Görlich 20cm units I have lying around....once a decorative ring becomes a USP listed on a spec sheet the madmen from marketing probably took over.

I wish to listen to Klangfilm in Korea next time I go there.

The owner ot this music cafe collected vintage audio through 50 years period.

He is 81 years old now but still in good health.

This place is open to public with fee of 10 usd but coffee and dessert included.

He is living upstairs of the building.

We attended same high school but he is 20 years senior than I.

This place is 40 miles north of Seoul.

If you have chance to visit Korea, it could be one of the must place for audiophile.

He is not very rich but had spent 2/3 of savings on buying vintage audio with understanding of angel wife for 50 years.

His only son is a professional photographer.


The entrance fee is 9$ not 10$ which include drink and muffin.

Great atmosphere here! The experience of sitting and listening to music with such an amazing sound system is incredible. Had a lovely time here and will come back again, definitely.

It's the place that you can listen classics. You must pay KRW10,000 for entrance fee and you will take a cup of tea or coffee. Murffin is supplied for free.

they made some sweet stuff, and the designs were very thought out!

Sorry, i'm telefunken boy i love the studioamps and old Klein&Hummel Speaker
with Altec, Ev and Görlich drivers. Active Speakers with tube amps.
I would like to lock myself in here and listen to music for days.

Unfortunately, the Telefunken O 85a speakers are often butchered to get the power amps. well-preserved devices are traded for over € 5k. For me, O 85a surround sound monitors are one of the best speakers that are absolutely worth listening to.

I have friends with the newer versions of the 30 (one has a 32 and the other has a rebuilt 38 that has the latest Carnegie drivers and crossover). I also have a pair of the new Rigolettos.

Yes tractrix and JMLC will focus more than a multi cell or radial, but are better if you have walls on the side close to the speaker. Also JMLCs can be bigger and are not that focused so there is a sufficiently wide sweet spot

The problem isn’t spherically shaped horns but the “spherical / Kugelwellen” geometry. It is entirely plausible to build constant directivity horns spherical. One very crude example would be a spherical conical horn, which actually has one advantage of being relatively decent for constant directivity (although other disadvantages too) - you will note that OMA use this type albeit as a 12 sided petal not a full spherical - the latter would also be fine. It just means the sides are parallel. An ice cream cone shape.
There is no free lunch with all this stuff. The Altec style multicells have a host of other problems such as fingering, which is a result of multiple beaming points. Radial horns have limited vertical dispersion.

I find my larger ones beam more than the smaller Rigolettos. My constant directivity horns in my DIY setup still don’t have the same wide sweet spot of a conventional tweeter.

Whether a horn beams at frequencies is down to the geometry of the horn.

A direct radiating tweeter will have a wide sweet spot for obvious reasons.

isnt some of the rational behind horn design to control the dispersion at the crossover point? At least thats something Geddes wrote about but was in practice for long.
