Modern speakers vs Vintage speakers

sounds good, maybe a bit of room tuning for the highs, the mundorf capacitors play very unvarnished and directly. I have them too.

I tamed sibilance using Cardas 101 cable for Fostex supertweeter.

Cardas 101 cable could be good choice if your system sounds bright.

On the other hand, it could sound dull in neutral system.

No cap is even better than a Mundorf, did you try a GOOD series resistor and a coil in parallel to the Fostex? (works great with the JBL I'm using, freq range is about the same) Nice feature is that with unwinding the coil you can tune the X-over freq to the ear.

If you use coil, then you may end up changing phase.

Thus I am happy with some cable rolling.

Cardas 101 seems to work.

It sounds good enough already.

It is time to enjoy music rather than paying attention to tidbit of sound.

Thomas , no amount of multiple amping of drivers , cable changes , EQing etc etc are going to alter the simple fact that your Altecs are in the wrong position in your room , they may sound better than in your recordings however (and it is not my intent to upset you ) they come across like a peaky horn ( with the midrange struggling to fill the void) stuck in a huge tin box where you have them now I IMHO of course

No criticism at all, but...can it be (very hard to say using a mono recording via YT) that one or more of the individual speakers is out of phase? sounds much like it as the o so important midrange is suffering and for the size of the subs the low end is strangely thin.... but. again, very hard to tell.

At present positiion, Altec give deep and realistic soundstage behind the speakers.

On the reverse position, it may give deep bass but not soundstage behind the speakers.

Thus no more meddling about position,.

It is always difficult to use subwoofer with main speaker.

Her voice is quite out of balance tonally...her upper nasally part is being projected quite forward... I don't know to tell you other than there needs to be more work done here to tame resonances and/or frequency response of that system.

I had Apogees as well (as did many of my friends) and I agree with you about coloration or rather lack of coloration from them. Still great speakers.

I won’t agree about the horn coloration. I have heard many horns with less coloration than what I hear in this video.

Why are you so concerned about projecting a soundstage into the large void behind your speakers ?
I am not advocating jamming the Altec’s hard against the wall , a good few feet out in fact.

You will still retain a great soundstage around your reversed listening position whilst gaining more body and solidity to your recordings whilst dampening a degree of the peakiness in the upper regions.

If you are so dead set against at least trying a different position for a day then that speaks of a somewhat closed mindset.

These A7 videos are really fun. Love the music too. I'm not sure the system is actually playing in the third (middle) video. The sound does not seem to change at all as the camera moves around the space, and there is no source that seems to be playing. Thanks for posting these.

Yes 3rd video is stereo and so much stereo it cant be a microphone recording.

Restored one may sound good but I wish to get original one from Korea dealer after full audition.

Not sure how many Koreans are wealthy enough to be able to buy a WE system let alone put it in a decent listening room, but there for sure is a good amount of WE aficionados, as well as a manufacturer who is doing nice things (Silbatone).
