The new audiophile vinyl series The Original Source from Deutsche Grammophon (AAA)

Who has the Seiji Ozawa & Boston Symphony OrchestraHector Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique?

How does this recording sound compared to other well-known versions?

Is this an original analog recording and an AAA release?

Yes. all analog like all the Original Source series. mixed to stereo and cut directly from the 4-track tapes. it's very good, great sonics, but i have a few others that are very good recordings too. i'm not the guy to tell you about the artistic merits of the performance. but lately this is the one i have been playing.

the RCA Munch/Boston 4 disc Classic 45 is superb, and i like the RR 45 from Kojian/Utah too.

Thank you, Mike! This is exactly the kind of information I was looking for!

How do you find the sound qualities of the DG compare to the Reference Recordings (which I listen to all the time by the way -- I don't know how to judge the performance, but I think overall it sounds fantastic)?

off the top of my head cannot say about the sonic differences, but i'll try to do a quick compare and let you know when i can do it.

That's sweet, but I was not intending to give you any homework!

I have it. A sonic favourite and a demonstration disc. The recording engineers nailed it to four track and the mixing and cutting by Rainier and Sidney is excellent. It is AAA or maybe just AA. it's downmixed without a 2 ch tape step.
Ozawa and Boston presents it without mannerism, almost slick. I vastly prefer it to my 1979 Wiener Philharmoniker/Haitink on Decca (Dutch pressing), recorded in the fabled Sofiensaal.

Most of these were 4 channel quadrophonic recordings that are now mixed to two channel stereo. All are AAA with the exception of some of the Bruckner in the box set, as noted on the web site.

That has been the purpose for introducing Original Source Vinyl - get worthwhile all analog pressings out as redo's of the less than impressive DG pressings from the 1970's.

The Los Angeles/Orange county Audio society let members know about a limited edition Ellington Indigos 45 RPM two discs. I normally stay away from 45s since I never felt any modest increase in sq was worth getting up so often to change sides ( I get my exercise in other ways). But I decided to pick this one up and very pleased with the entire package and sq. Still don’t like getting up but worth it in this case.

That is a fabulous recording -- one of my Ellington favorites.

I see a 45rpm 30th Anniversary LA/Orange County Audio Society 1000 pressing edition made in purple vinyl. It is offered on several of the main retail sites. My experience with colored vinyl is somewhat checkered. I'm quite curious about the choice to use purple colored vinyl -- is that to make it special for the event or are there other reasons?

Fwiw there is also a black vinyl 45rpm 3000 edition pressing version available.

These are done by Impex, whom I find one of the more quality consistent reissuers.

Here is some info from album insert and web re the Ellington Indigos album. I guess purple is considered a hue of indigo

I just played the new Bruckner 9 from DG Original Source and the beginning track is very noisy. First time this has happened with these albums for me. Looking at the DG website it seems like I pay for return postage to them. Is that correct? Not sure if it’s worth the effort if true.

That's disappointing.
Maybe naive question, but can pressing companies do a "verification playback" of each disc? That way they know if there's manufacturing artifacts, etc?

Is this Bruckner from the Giulini set? What a downer. And paying the return postage to DG adds a bite to the dissapointment. If I mail-order a defective product it should be the seller that pays for its return.

As best as I can determine, the 6-LP Giulini Bruckner set is not strictly in the TOS series. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I understand Giulini's Bruckner's 7,8 & 9 originals were digital recordings from the 1980s, which means they likely did not have an analog 4-track master. DG has issued them remastered at half-speed from Emile Berliner -- which explains why there are 2 records with each recording.

Yup. The Giulini Bruckner 7-9 LP set is not part of The Original Source series.

Yes, from the Giulini set. It is remastered but not advertised as part of the OS set. DG did email me back today when I asked about returns fro USA. They want me to sent a video? They didn’t answer my question about return postage but their FAQ states they don’t pay from other countries. I’m thinking maybe they will if they’re satisfied with a video demonstrating noise. I guess they want to hear it themselves. A bit odd. Last night I did notice there what appears to be a smudge on album so I ran it through a heavy cycle on my Degritter US machine. It did improve a bit so today I’m going to try and hand scrub with some other cleaners and enzyme cleaner to see if that’s the problem.

The Pollini Chopin Preludes has been a long time favorite of mine. That and his Chopin Etudes.
I recently bought a double-length 7.5 ips, 4-track, Dolby B encoded tape of the Pollini Chopin Preludes and Polonaises, manufactured by Stereotape in the early 1970s. The grand price was $10 on Ebay, and the tape and box look new. I bought the LPs when they were released (I used to buy any Pollini LPs when they were released), and didn't think much of the sound. Typical DGG sound of the era, which was tipped up and thin. I was pleasantly surprised by this tape, which sounds warmer, with more body and better microdynamics. And of course, there are no pops and clicks or wow, but there is some crosstalk on silent sections. I also bought a tape of the Chopin Etudes, manufactured by Ampex, but there is obvious pumping on the quieter passages due to poor Dolby mastering. The louder pieces sound great. I am interested to see what they can do with these recordings now.

I cleaned the records with KL ultrasonic cleaner before first listen. The second side of Symphony 7 had noise in 2 spots. The noise was a brief crackling on two revolutions. I cleaned them again and most of the crackling is now gone. It is so brief, I will keep this set. All pressings are very quiet for groove or background noise. The sound is very similar to the TOS pressings - lots of hall ambiance, natural sound of instruments. And fantastic performance! I always liked Symphony 9; these recordings have given me a better appreciation of 7 & 8.
