Amir Joins the club. Finally!

Hey Amir... almost time for an upgrade...!!

You guys are terrible :D. Fortunately, the unit for work must be portable and take little space so other than Nagra T, I am not tempted.

Next step is a visit to Disneyland. I mean Ki's house. :D We are hooking up next month after he gets back from his trip. I might be tempted to remove the requirement for portability then. :D :D

You're in LUCK!! Studer makes a great deck called the A810! We've taken ours to a few of the shows.

And Amir heard my A810 so no excuses on his part

Supposedly the Studer A810 in the upright, portable orientation only weighs about 68 pounds. That is a lot lighter than the hybrid upgraded Ampex 440C/B R2R deck that I am having prepared in an upright orientation which will weigh close to 100 pounds.

You laugh, but I suspect the best way to create multiple copies of a great-sounding tape and preserve its magic would be to make a digital file of the closest thing you can get to the original master, then copy multiple tapes from there. Not to open the can, but that would make a very interesting blind listening test.

Tim

Actually Tim I was serious. I often use emoticons (smilies) as a diversion! :)

Back in 60 to 70, we put a R2R in our system, mainly for LP's or radio program's recording. saving money from copy right, sound quality can't be better than the original, but today copy right's value is not same as before and can be much easier in digital recording, those who want to step in again in R2R is looking for the highest sound quality and the machines are in pro or semi pro too, so the source has to be from master tape ( make live record by ourselves) or master dub to show the different quality of analog sound, otherwise it is wast to step in

At one point I was using an open reel tape machine deck just for that; recording my own music performed live, and also with friends.
That's what analog multitracks were good for, back then.

Now you can do that digitally from your PC.

Did you guys have seen the film "Pulp Fiction" by Quentin Tarantino?

Remember that tune playing from that reel tape in the living room?
And the way all things interacted harmoniously with each other?

... :)

You will step into a endless road if you start to compare different machines or different recordings !

I must say, it has been 30+ years since I have been this excited about an audio equipment purchase.

Congratulations, Amir!
I would advise you to take as soon as possible an anti-tape vaccination - I have now bough a second A80, just to have a standard and a tweaked one...

Thanks Microstrip. I see that you are all set for a double-blind test!!! :D

Wonderful acquisition Amir. I've been scrounging around for a decent Otari too but getting the right one always seems tough to do. I've got a decent Teac to keep me going though. Welcome to the world of tape!

Hehe

...I am not tempted....I might be tempted...:D :D

Did you say that you're just getting started with tape :rolleyes:
Yeah -- Amir's exhibiting symptoms of the affliction...he may very well require life support after exposure to Ki's menagerie of R2R delights :D

Wonder what shape I will be in a year from now. I would be typing backward probably. :D

BTW guys, where do you get blank tapes?

Take him up e-a-s-y, Bruce

He's going to require decompression after exposure to the Studer...
Lest he become delirious from the intoxicating effect of the Studer rendering the best in analog tape :D
There have been case studies of those that never recover...not a bad way to go :p:D
