You noticed they mentioned that most racers are on 28s now, right?
Solid state is pretty popular, too. ;)
definitely the choice if you are racing a 1km 4 corner criterium. Taking a 90 degree curve at 30+ mph and accelerating from o-900 watts. Not so much for a time trial.

Just as a reminder

Tires are as prone towards marketing that doesn't align with reality as any other product. Width is especially tricky. One large manufacturer issued a few years worth of road tires that measured at least one and often two sizes larger when installed and inflated for a roughly 150lb/67kg rider. Meaning a hundred miles down the road your 23c relaxed to just over 27c.

The opposite is also true. Tires that never come close to reaching stated width.

Tubulars do allow for narrower tires since they don't pinch flat. So you can run lower pressures just like tubeless tires (but without some of the latter's weaknesses that can show up in such narrow tire sizes).

I'm curious- were you always talking about tubulars in our conversation??

The best thing about moving to disc brakes is the greater range of tire options. I’m on 28s right now and was disappointed they got a clean bill of health at the end of the season because they’re getting replaced with 32s when the time comes. Riding a Canyon Endurace CF SLX 9 Di2. Don’t be fooled by the Endurace moniker - it’s wicked fast.

...OMG viva la disc brake! I did a race that ended down a ski slope. Gut-busting uphill, traverse a while, and down we go. Water bars. Rock-wash baby-head rubble. I couldn't feel my hands. I thought I was gonna die. The next week I bought the then-new RockShox RS1. And when discs came out I was first in line. Maybe ''96 or 97? I'm losing track.

But suspension and disc brakes bring sooo much comfort and sooo much safety, it's mind-blowing. And discs on road bikes: oh yeah. Wide tires? You betcha. Tubulars without mech-support is a nightmare, IMO. I still run them on an '82 Masi...and I pray to the puncture gods every time I take her out.

So confidence inspiring to be able to reel-in your road bike at 50+ mph. Heehaw...

At 50+ mph the pucker factor is gawdamn high, excellent brakes are a must. Also nice place for a wider lower pressure tire — at 50mph on 23 pumped to 100psi I’d need a mouth guard unless brand new pavement. Yikes!

his is my last video on the subject. I think there is ample info on the subject for you to make your own decision. Your approach may vary depending on your goals and riding conditions. There is a sweet spot. You can use the data too narrow your search and find what works best for you.
I t is clear the days of the using the narrowest tire at the highest pressure is gone.
Keep the rubber down and enjoy the ride.

When you get old and decrepit, comfort is just as important as speed! I’ve been riding my gravel bike exclusively when the weather enables an outside ride and I’m actually not looking as forward to getting on my road bike as I thought I would be.

Many factors go into comfort.
1.Cacon is best
2. Pros want the s,allet frame possibe. you wanr your back fkat.

My Kestral carbon was hit twice by a car. No damage to the bike. OTOH
I was saving up fo a Merlin titanium or Colagno Masterlight{steel). I kind of wish more was done with titanium. It still amazes me what Cannondale achieved with aluminum. Most rides last 1-2 hours. The ride is over before fatigue sets in.
For road bikes and ultimate performance, I recommend clinchers and latex tubes. For flat protection you can stuff two tubes in your pocket along with some co2 cartridges. For longer trips you can store a foldable spare tire under your seat.

.
I have a Merlin , its not overly fast and its not what Id call light, but it IS everything else. Responsive, comfortable and stable at high speeds.
