Avengers 4: Endgame - Trailer

NorthStar, I would love a superhero film that feels even partially related to the original source material, one where the actors don't have it in their contract to be unmasked all the time.

The only one I can think of is the Judge Dredd film from 5 years ago. Dredd kept his helmet on, and was as bad ass a silent vigilante anti-hero as you could imagine. Just like the comics.

The last sci fi/fantasy film I truly enjoyed from start to finish? Dark City from late 90s. Disappeared in the mix from Matrix hype, but pretty essential viewing.

That one had a little Christian Bale action, yes?

My other big criticisms of EVERY superhero film is this tedious overreliance of overzingy digital effects, no gravity or density in the image and movement, and this weird fashion of slowing efx shots to slo-mo mid-air as the background action carries on regardless.

It's totally tedious. Black Panther was full of it. Looks like the new Spidey film is too.

But, hey, the kids like it.

Dark City (1998) is a very good one. ...Directed by Alex Proyas.

* Dredd is from 2012 (7 years ago). That one is a guilty pleasure in 3D (Blu-ray).
It's very colorful, some very cool slow-mo 3D scenes, outrageously entertaining. ...Violent too, but "humoros" movie style violent.

I did not see Avengers: Endgame (((3D))) yet.
But the previous one ... Infinity War, I liked it in 3D.

That would be awesome if they never remove their masks ... and that we wouldn't know who are the actors playing them? :D But then, how would they be able to fall in love with their masks on?

NS, it was SUCH a big deal when I was growing up to feel like only I knew Spidey was Peter Parker. I totally identified w him and his angst as a tortured outsider (no change as a Zu man on this forum LOL).

The fact that his identity is known to so many, as are other characters in the Marvel Films Universe is totally tepid for me personally.

But yes, Robert Downey and Chris Evans et al I'm sure stipulated minimal time under their masks so as not to hinder their valuable profiles.

When growing up I was more into Sergio Leone's Western Italian flicks, with the music scores of Ennio Morricone. ...And Federico Fellini's flicks. I wasn't into The Mask of Zorro, or Batman & Robin with their masks. I wasn't reading comic books either.
All those superheroes from Marvel and DC comics (the films) came much later on for me.

My favorite is the Batman (DC) trilogy from Christopher Nolan. I like Dredd too.
...Iron-Man is cool too, X-Men, Wolverine. The older I get the more I discover our world's silliness. :D And I like it, only for fun.

When it comes time to serious movies I don't get stuck in silly movies. :D
Avengers is pure onscreen fun...and I'm a big fan of 3D...so technically I value the effects and the works from the artists.

In China and in Europe movie lovers are more into 3D than in North America (USA & Canada); they vote with open wallets. So the movie studios concentrate there for 3D releases. And also for the home video format.

4K looks super great too...quasi 3D from some titles.

But there is an undeniable fact about movies: Fantasies and Superheroes are big world money makers. Silliness pays big time, seriousness fades away as quick as a lost lagoon ghost ship under the ocean floor never discovered. Kids love having fun, to dream. Adults too, except they don't all like to admit it. ...I think. ...Or they easily find reasons to not to. ...I don't know; only each one person knows.

Yes, Gone With The Wind and Titanic are love stories, for young and old adults.
Avatar and Avengers are fantasies...like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter.

It's fun talking about films, silly ones and serious ones.
Just like it's fun talking about music, awful music and awesome music.

And I like to keep track with the latest techs in video and audio equipment. It's all related, our senses and sensibilities.

It's a good bunch here, of silly and serious people about their hobbies and life in general.

Tinka and I saw the movie tonight at an iPic theater (a fancy movie theater concept with big lounge chairs, food and drinks and waiter service, which automatically puts you in a good mood and predisposes you to like whatever you are about to watch).

Neither of us liked the movie. We both thought it was a big commotion and kind of a mess where everything including the kitchen sink was thrown in more than once.

I always take it as a very positive sign when my favorite movie reviewer, Joe Morgenstern of The Wall Street Journal, likes a movie. He liked this movie quite a bit. I don’t get it.

I don’t understand why people are raving about this movie.

It remains the case that the only one of all of these movies that I actually liked was the original Iron Man.

Ron, I am not surprised for one bit.

If you didn't watch the first part...Infinity War (and also the two prior Avengers flicks), it's absolutely normal what you experienced with your wife.
We've told you before, and your favorite movie reviewer should have told you so as well.
It is evident that he saw Infinity War before reviewing Endgame.

There's a full story about those Marvel flicks (22 of them). They are all related, and particularly the last two...Infinity War & Endgame.

I'm with you about the first Iron Man flick (2008), the portal of all Marvel flicks.

Actually, Bob, I did see those prior movies. I also saw the two Captain America movies. I also saw the second and third Iron Man movies. I also saw the Thor movie. (These are the kinds of mindless movies I tend to watch on plane trips.)

Valid points. However, i never understood Spideys extreme popularity. He was never my fav superhero. Too much angst and inner turmoil.

I thought that was Batman?

Wisnon, you have to remember in the early 60s when Marvel exploded, DC w it's self satisfied and bland heroes, and horror/Westerns/romance comics dominated.

No one had ever seen flawed heroes racked w self doubt and angst like Spidey, The Thing, etc. Marvel absolutely tapped into teenage insecurity, and for this Stan "The Man" Lee was responsible, w the invaluable help of artists Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko.

So, for me and other teenagers who were a little quiet, introverted and insecure, Marvel really spoke to us.

The movies really don't tap into this for me personally, and the 90% running time masks off aspect is the clincher.

I thought teens were secure, adults more insecure, and adults once they turn audiophiles the most insecure

Ked, angst
Teens = will I ever afford a high end system?
Adult = can I keep affording it?
Exhalted audiophile higher plane = what the frig have I been doing?

Ron

You’re one better than me as I can’t even watch them on airplanes. Like you I have seen the ones you mentioned as well as many many more. Mindless!! They aren’t even that good.;)

I even saw the last Thor movie as well as Wonder Woman which I saw because of her looks not because of the story :)

As someone said these are the movies that our kids flock to. I was only entertained the times I went with my grand kids
