Burmester 911 mk3

I am very, very familiar with Burmester Genesis combo.. What about the wonderful , unheralded, underrated, not appreciated and really ignored by too many audiophiles Gen 5.3.. ??
That would be one full range and wide dynamic combo in a small package ..

Thanks, Frantz.

There are somethings in life where spending more money is no guarantee of success and could even be greatly detrimental to happiness. Buying too big/expensive a loudspeaker for a small room is one of these. Sometimes, it is necessary to "downgrade" and buy a smaller loudspeaker to improve the musical performance. Unfortunately, for many audiophiles, by the time that they realize the speakers are too large for their room, it is way too far to turn back to buy the "cheap" Genesis 5.3.

I've met many of these potential customers, and they always want one of my big speakers. Which would be an even bigger mistake than the ones they have already.....

On the other hand, I have many customers with the G5.3 who say that it will be the last loudspeaker they will buy in their life.

Unfortunately, that was the launch price 2010. We sold at practically cost to get the market moving. It's $64k until end-2012, and the price will go up 2013. While I love my job, I won't have it for long if I keep selling speakers at cost.

---- Gary, you need a new job? :b

Thanks, Frantz.

While the 5.3 are excellent speakers (I listened to them at the KL show although not under ideal conditions), they didn't 'speak' to me as much as their bigger brothers. Having said that, I think I can live with them if I don't have the space.

Yeah, once you listen to ribbons, it's hard to turn back :) Unfortunately, I haven't yet figured out how to make the ribbon speakers smaller than the G2jr. In order not to lose the dynamics, I can't go shorter on the existing ribbon design.... and going shorter and wider I run into problems with dispersion matching the tweeters......

Other speaker to consider Rockport Avira

Since you are in South Africa maybe you should give Vivid Audio a listen ... People on this forum love them .. I haven't heard them but they are in your neighborhood .. so .. They look very strange to me :)
What's wrong with the B30?

hi,

actually, i havent had the chance to hear the genesis on any set up and i might struggle to get to hear them in south africa. but i will do so at the earliest opportunity when i am back in singapore. vivid is certainly interesting, especially, the Giyas but they aint cheap! and by the way, the shape is a bit weird and would need getting used to. i am in fact off to durban one of these days in december to check them out.
now the b30s are actually lovely speakers and i do like their bass performance. the only thing they lack is scale adn with the 2 911s, i guess the next thing to do is to probably upgrade the speakers to onces which offer scale and grandeur.....though i maybe wrong and would like your views please

thanks for all the help

cheers

You want grandeur? You want a concert hall? You won't go wrong with the big Genesis. I haven't heard the G2.2 jr but I suspect it should be able bring you that concert hall scale. I'm familiar with the G1.1s and till this day, I haven't heard better speakers.

It will deliver that concert hall scale - we will have a pair at CES this year. In the smallish rooms in The Venetian, I'm a little worried that it will be too much and too big a speaker, but thankfully we have enough adjustability to hopefully ameliorate the small room.

Hi

Just to complicate things a bit for you :) I mention the following:
Magnepan MG 20.7 ... With a pair of 911 driving them you may be in heaven for a long time... Due to their relatively low prices around 15K in the USA, they are rarely mentioned along the great speaker of our time. They are, among the best speakers at any price. My current living accommodations dictate smaller speakers the main reason why I am still on the fence for a speaker based system.

Scaena 3.1, I don't know if it will fit your 30 K budget ... as good as advertised ..

What about the wonderful ( smitten by these I must say) Magico Q3? With determinate negotiations, you may get these at your budget methinks ... I would love to hear such a system! Actually that is a system I would love to own ..

Yes, the 911s have great synergy with the Q3s. My dealer demoed this combination and they sounded superb.

I just added a pair of Townshend supertweeters to my Extremas and I must say that these supertweeters just opened up the treble and the extra air they add to the system is just superb. Voices are more natural and real. The midrange seems to have more weight (I'm not sure why). Extremas owners should try these supertweeters.

why does this make sense? I am not questioning it...i am seeking to understand better. I believe Wilson has 2 extra tweeters in the back of my X1/Grand Slamms...is this a similar concept? So does the Sonus Faber, and possibly the Aida?

Great read, Lloyd. It's difficult to listen without the tweeters now. So far, other than the preamp/amp upgrade, these tweeters have the most profound effect (in a positive way) on the system.

do you have jumper cables from the main speaker posts to the supertweeters? how are they connected to the main speakers and to the amp?

You just connect the positive terminal of the supertweeter to the positive terminal of your main speaker and do the same for the negative terminals. If you have more than one set of sockets, use the top pair of tweeter terminals. You don't have to connect them to your amps. That simple.

Well, with a sad heart, I sold my 911 MK3. I will be embracing new technology in the form of Theta's new Prometheus monoblocks with Ncore technology. I sold my GNSC Wadia S7i and am the first to have the Oppo 105 tube modded by Modwright as we speak . I have sold off most of my expensive gear, except for my Concert Fidelity pre. Will I regret it? Probably, but this hobby for me is to find new and exciting gear. I will keep my Venture speakers as a solid foundation though. I have spent many countless hours enjoying my 911 MK3 and I almost bought a pair of enormous all class A Vitus monos, but I want to hear what the future will bring.

Congratulations Jim,

Don't look back. My 911 monos are sold as well. My Dartzeel is amazing in my system, blows away the Burmester gear. I am happy, very happy.
