Can You Believe This-The Government Wants Us To Go EV but In So Doing They Will impose a gas surcharge

Yeah, it doesn't matter much what we are all driving today; EV is here to stay and expand.
It's our children's children who will drive EV in masses for the better world ...

Us it's our gas cars and stereo systems who drive our mojo today.

The children are already driving EVs in the masses. They are called scooters and they are clogging the streets of major downtowns. Do you really think our grandchildren are going to be driving cars in masses the way we do? I’m not so sure. Kids buy few cars today. What makes you think they will buy cars in the future?

I much prefer your Jag (the black one) over any Tesla models.

Being an « early » adopter of an EV for my daily commute during the week, I wished the manufacturers would produce smaller and less expensive EVs. The main reason I chose the Jaguar I-Pace over the Tesla S and the Audi E-Tron is because it was the smallest car of the three. As long as I can put my Studer A80 or a bicycle in the cargo space, I am fine.

To answer your question Ron, I don’t view the S and the Taycan as good comparisons. One is a 4 door family sedan, the other a sports car built for the track. Price wise, I think the S, as of now, tops out at about $100k or $120. The Taycan you can order now starts at $180k and with options can cost $241k. The S now has 370 miles of range. The Plaid S that is scheduled to start production next October will be more of a track capable car, should have 400 miles or so of range and will by my guess, cost $150k. I agree with Steve that the upcoming Roadster is a better comparison. It is built for the track, will do 0 to 60 in under 2 seconds and will have a range of 600 miles with a 200kw battery pack. It will be pricey at $200k and $250k for the founders series autographed by Elon and Frans. The original Roadster was a tiny car as it was essentially a modded Lotus. The new Roadster is bigger and more roomier. The Taycan doesn’t have tons of room either as the head room is lacking and the rear seats have little in the way of leg room. I am sure Elon will let you check one out at the Hawthorne design center!

I don't see kids of the future, say fifty years from now, taking the train, the bus, ...to go on vacation by the country side with their families or by the ocean scenic drives.
Our children's young families will be driving EV, mostly.

Plus the Taycan range is about 1/3 of that of the Roadster

Joe, I am glad you have a car you love! I know that feeling!

How competitive against the Model S do you think will be the Porsche Taycan?

(I know the Taycan’s competitive disadvantages presently are price (higher than Model S) and range (loser than Model S.)

I read that a race between Taycan and Model S was won by Model S.

Not that I am big but I personally don’t care for tiny or even small cars. I find the Roadster tiny and even the Boxster/Cayman too small.

This is one reason why Steve and I happen to love the SL: it is large for a 2 seater. I think it is the largest (in terms of leg room, interior cabin space and trunk capacity) 2 seat convertible in production today.

Yes, the SL uses a gas powered ICE. I feel no compunction to express my political views through my automotive selections.

The model S is a big car. Barely fits in my garage. Really nice for touring. Low stress.

I'm sure more models are coming up to suit a larger clientele ...
Elon Must have a team of excellent car designers ...

November is the expected launch of the Tesla Pickup. Nobody knows what it looks like yet, but Elon says it's killer.

Interesting article. I think Norway needs more solar. The thing that is lost on this article is that the electric can get between 80 and 100 equivalent MPG compared to the 25MPG the average ICE car gets, and no oil changes. This is an IMMEDIATE reduction in CO2 emissions no matter what the power source is.

Also lost is even though the emissions of cars is half of that 30 years ago, the total US emissions from private and commercial transportation continues to rise. It never dropped or flattened. This is because there are just that many more ICE vehicles on the road.

Thank you, Joe, for your thoughts. :)

I still think the Tesla car which is comparable to the Taycan is the Model S. I think people compare 4 door, 5 seat sedans to other 4 door, 5 seat sedans, not to small, 2 door, 2+2 cars.

I agree that Porsche's marketing of the Taycan emphasizes its sportiness; that a 4 door, 5 seat family sedan can also double as a sports car, if you need your sports car in the form of a family sedan.

Interesting, thank you. As for the source, I found this bit about their bias:

https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/foundation-for-economic-education/

Their facts in the article may still be right, but I think deserve further investigation.

Al, did you also check about the bias of each WBF member? :)

Who can we trust today in this world we live in? It's very tricky because we live in a world full of lies, deceptions, corruption, low blows, ...an outlaw world, our world, the one we decide to be in, to accept, to respect, to obey, to be submissive to, to be slave of.
Nobody can take our dignity from us, so we go cleaner we go EV, we are free it's our choice.
The gas pumps here are like dictators from black hell. The faster they disappear the better off we all be. As taxpayers they work for us; time to fire them all and employ better energy producers for humanity and their planet. It's also better for peace and it gets rid of wars.
We protect our environnent we prospect in health and wealth...everyone.

I think the tide has just turned direction...about time ...

I agree with dcc we need smaller EVs. There's a town near here that made golf carts legal in city limits, imo that's a great idea.

The issue I have with Tesla and similar EVs is the environmental impact of the materials and manufacturing of the batteries and motors are many times what's required, the new Tesla roadster has enough battery and motor to make a dozen small EVs for city use and that's not an exaggeration. IMO you're probably better off buying a Ferrari 812 Superfast and getting 7-10 mpg. I mean, 200 kWh battery? Isn't than enough for about a million smartphones?

I have no issue with people buying toys, it's the thought that it's a "green" choice and the attitude that comes with it when the truth is the Tesla roadster may be the worst possible choice of car in terms of environmental impact.

You should check out the Camaro convertible, it's pretty big. The amazing feat of engineering required to waste such a large amount of space is a wonder to behold. The car is big yet it has basically no trunk when the top is down, the rear seats have zero legroom and are impossible to get into, and somehow the interior feels like a small sports car despite the generous width of the car. I'm not sure how it's possible, yet there it is... :)

It is, although many communities like The Villages have mostly gas powered golf carts. Bad pollution from these as they don't have emissions regulations.

Also, it's about time that golf carts used LI batteries instead of lead-acid. Much more efficient. I don't understand why it's taking so long for this change.

That would be a perfect example of a car I would not care for. The SL is small on the outside, but big on the inside, with legroom greater than an S Class coupe.

My Nissan Versa SV is the same. Tiny on the outside, but with great legroom. People who climb in the back, with front seats in regular position, cannot believe how much space they have. I get that same reaction every time. Trunk size is rather generous too.
