You're funny. Then why did you bring up the name of our president? You started it.

Bob, that is not proof!

The point is that I and others feel the overreaction is disproportionate to the data we are seeing. It is bad if it develops complications and bad for old people and people with certain issues and generally anyone immune compromised. It can also threaten the health infrastructure if there are lots of lung cases. As already shown by me ,if you follow my posts here, BOTH Italy and China have monstrously bad air pollution in their major cities. Just today at breakfast and Italian colleague from ROME reminded me of how Milan had to take drastic measure back in Dec because of the foul air. Recipe for pneumonia that!

I am not proclaiming proof of anything. All I am saying that the daily lives of people in the US, especially in large cities is changing dramatically day by the day over the last week or two.

My thoughts are not about the virus and how/if it mutates it's about the effect on the economy, education, travel (air, train, sea).

I will leave the "data" extrapolations to you and others, I am just a witness to the world around me and at the moment it's an experience that I personally have never encountered before. This experience is not listening to the over-hyped media or the government officials, it's just about literally every fabric of my personal daily life has changed in the last week.

I go about my daily life in NYC -Uber, subways, gym, restaurants, people coming in for demos, doing installations, shipping and receiving large international shipments, etc and every single activity has changed in some way.

My only point is that the flu as bad as it is and as many as it kills, never had one little effect on my daily life. This is different for me that's all I'm saying.

Panic has broken out. 3 confirmed cases.

Your Health Minister isn't doing too well. Maybe more measures are coming out.
Second day of her self isolation, she reports feeling better. More concerned for her mid-80s mum who is also ill.

Story may be that Nadine was in contact w many mps in Parliament just prior to being diagnosed.

Indeed, some reasonable criticism that Houses Of Parliament and Lords should be shut down temporarily.

Potentially up to 650 mps and similar numbers of Lords packed like sardines on the Benches...and 5x that number of support staff in the building. Plus public galleries.

Face masks are not only overused but they are also misused

The mask’s function is to prevent spit from flying out of your mouth and landing on things when you cough or sneeze. It flies out of your mouth and is caught in the mask instead. If you are the person who is sick and not on the way to the doctor, go home. Let the people who really need them have the masks. Like doctors, nurses and people who are sick.
Coronavirus does not appear to be airborne in the sense that it doesn't remain floating around freely in the air for a long time, as with measles. You are probably not going to breathe it in,

I haven’t seen anyone advocating face masks for healthy people, but every video from China and Italy shows most/all people with face masks. That alone appears to be evidence they don’t protect the healthy.

Not true. Sorry. There is a lot of evidence now that that SARS-CoV2 can travel almost 5m. A recent paper from Singapore has found virus particles in the air vents of rooms with infected patients. A mask works both ways. If they are misused then educate the public but don't tell them not to wear one. Countries this conplacent will pay the price. There are several days where you might be asymptomatic and not not know that you are infecting others. Much of the capability of the virus to aerosolise is not fully understood yet. To tell people like this to stay home is irresponsible since there is no way for them to know. If there aren't enough masks health services need to be better prepared.

I should add although I shouldn't have to, that obviously a mask alone is not good enough. Other habits such as washing hands are probably more important but they ALL contribute to risk reduction.

Howie

the very reason you give is why sick people should wear the masks not healthy people. Besides the Chinese have been wearing masks since the SARS outbreak

Howie

I have watched healthy people wear face masks and they ALL touch their faces and noses and adjust the masks with their hands...... a no no
Look they're not in an OT wearing sterile PPE. They're going to touch their faces anyway but they might touch their mouths less while wearing a mask. No system is perfect it's all about risk reduction. I don't know why everyone is so fixated about absolutes.

Let's assume there were enough masks and everyone wore them. Would there be more cases , less or the same?
