Coronavirus ...

I'm no expert on epidemics, pandemics, viruses, diseases, masks, etc.

I agree with Howie and Tang and others on the wearing of masks and in particular to protect others and ourselves, plus nobody knows if we are infected or not from the Coronavirus.
So it is irrelevant if we are infected or not because we simply don't know and might as well be actively preventive and health considerate by wearing one than not.

It's not a question of if and what, it's a question of life and death. Any smallest protection counts.
For the sake of our children, our elders, of ourselves, of everyone.

Masks should be available for the entire planet...7.8 billion times hundreds, thousands.
If you want to invest today invest in companies that make masks, the best masks.

I maintain that the masks you wear are mostly inept at the prevention of transmission. You need a micropore filter in the mask and I bet most of the masks yiure using lack

Never my intention to persuade you. Just stating my perspective. Once again negligence causes unnecessary regret.

You know all the experts are saying NOT to wear a mask, right? They are explicitly asking people not to. It won't protect you.

Social responsibility and respect for others safety are key Bob. You might have heard a recent incident when a high society Vietnamese lady became a super spreader. She went to Italy fashion event and got infected without knowing. She knew of the infection problem in Italy. Yet she kept traveling the world after and posted pictures in her FB. When she flew back to Vietnam she was in First Class with 30 other riches and politicians. Now the gov't have to have so much work going after those people. She was enjoying France and other places as evident on her FB. On contrary, the Thai media has been telling people to be socially responsible when travel to infected area. A famous Thai actress went to the same event in Italy. She flew back to Thailand with her mask on and she spent 14 days staying in her condo not going anywhere. That is social responsibility.

Which experts to trust? So many experts. Chinese experts said otherwise. They have experience first hand. Not trying to convince anyone. Trust your instinct and who you want to trust.

Well you can Google it, many experts in the field are stating this. It was on the national TV news here also, assume it was the CDC person asking people not to do it. I don't pretend to know anything medical, just taking the doctor's orders.

your Opinion of course or is this how mass hysteria starts

your Opinion of course or is this how mass hysteria starts

Right now I am not hearing much guidance from the US in terms of what people should be doing. Locals officials and organizations are making their own decisions but i would think that this should be messaged from the federal government. This next week is critical with respect to providing direction.

For me here is how I see it..... we may agree to disagree on many of the issues. What we should all agree as one humanity is that this is a pandemic and what can each of us do to protect ourselves and loved ones. if you feel face masks protect then do as Bob suggests and have them available for all humanity. But there are so many other things to heed as well as to do. This is where humanity needs to get on board.

yesterday I posted Medicare recommendations here in this country which were all very sage and stressing the severity of the virus.

all local municipalities are now making proper decisions

All NCAA games are without anyone in the stands

All TV late night talk shows are without an audience

more to come as I agree there has to be uniformity across the land

Are you watching the national news at all? What to do is constantly being blasted out at every press conference. You can see what to do at www.coronavirus.gov. You’ll note it says NOT to wear masks unless you are sick.

Not to be political, but our president is speaking at 9pm eastern tonight.

Let me relay what has recently happened to us here. I went with my business partner to a Cedia Tech Summit run here in a local hotel in Parkland, Florida at the Heron Bay Club. This event happened on Feb 25 th. I went to tag along as we decided to go to lunch while we were out at a place we like in the area. We went in, took a quick lap around and left. The following Monday i woke up with a sinus headache and a sore throat. I went that afternoon to my Dr. since I have had this before and know that I need some antibiotics to get rid of this. My Dr. asked me if I had traveled etc. etc. and that was the extent of the interview and certainly no talk about being tested. Moving forward this Morning, after being sick for a few days I see a notice from Cedia that someone at the event , who was displaying there , tested positive for COVID19. I knew i was there since my picture is shown in the event picture attached to the announcement,

I am not an alarmist nor am I afraid however this event is going to do some serious damage to the economy and the way we interact probably for a long time. My advice is be smart I would never in my dreams believed I could get exposed. I am at this point in my life a stay at home person and live a relatively quiet life which is my choice.

I give this organizations credit for being proactive.

here at the COVID-19 epi-center, the local government, both State and County, are doing morning briefing's to the public with the latest information, which is then spread to all the media.

i won't try to recite the details, it's out there if you have an interest.

as much of a small government person as i am, this is the stuff government should do, and are doing quite well here in the State of Washington.

not sure you can paint the country with a broad brush, it seems to me you need local buy in that lines up with the local governments. business, academia, health care and government together. not sure the Fed's could stay as focused. Federal agencies simply need to support this.

coming to a state near you.....at any moment.

our proximity to the Pacific Rim + Vancouver B.C. likely got us out ahead of the wave.....the rest of the country will roll through eventually.

Tang, I'm 100% with you, and Howie.

Previously I wasn't so sure, because of what I was reading.
Now I'm much more advanced in my awareness...thank you dear Tango sir.
And thanks to Howie too.

I don't think they know what to do

I can't tell if these numbers are US numbers or global. I think they are US only.

People need to take the "running of the numbers" with a grain of salt. Projections are highly dependent on the assumptions used to drive them. Assumptions are guesses. One could take the same model, adjust a couple assumptions, and come up with very different results.

I have no idea how they set the assumptions and if they are supportable.

Interestingly, his projected death rate is "only" 0.5%.

For comparison purposes, 1 billion people get the flu every year worldwide. 45 million Americans are infected each year.

If the numbers above are just US it means that he predicts CV will have twice the incidence rate as flu in the US. In another discussion he said 20-60% of Americans would be infected. That comes to 66 to 200 million. This doesn't tie to his 96 million cases. I also can't see 50% of the people needed hospitalizations.

Something doesn't seem right with these numbers.

I can't refute what he is saying but I think he is a bit of an alarmist. That doesn't mean that this isn't a serious situation.

He mentions obesity as a risk factor. I have seen no statistics showing the severity of the illness or death based on level of obesity. I think he is guessing here.
Worse percentage i have seen is serious cases equals 11% of ongoing cases...so circa 10m if 96m infected. 5% death rare would be 10x his number...ie 5m not 500k.

your Opinion of course or is this how mass hysteria starts

Of course it is my opinion.
And here to expand a little more on it Steve ...

We aren't prepared for what's coming up. And there are not enough masks around, in particular for emergency medical staff, hospital doctors and nurses, and not enough respirators to save lives.

As for mass hysteria, I am extremely calm...this is who I am and always have been and will die calm as a pond under a bridge in the middle of August without a single breeze in the air, not even a mosquito buzzing around.

I beg to differ. The local authorities are telling people what they should do. The federal government has been issuing conflicting messages. Some are saying this will just go away while are are saying it will get worse. That is not a clear message to me.
