I beg to disagree. The local authorities are telling people what they should do. The federal government has been issuing conflicting messages. Some are saying this will just go away while are are saying it will get worse. That is not a clear message to me.

I’d listen to the CDC and not the local authorities.

They need to work in conjunction with one another. The CDC can't tell local communities to quarantine. They can tell local officials that is the recommendation but the local officials have to make the call and enforce it. The NY governor made the call (I think) to quarantine New Rochelle after the break out there.

I do agree that the CDC is giving good information for how individuals can best protect themselves.

The bottom line is people need to think for themselves a little. A big ask in 2020 I know. Use the CDC guidelines and take the right action. Don’t wait for some politician to tell you to quarantine yourself if you feel your life is in jeopardy.

That is easier said than done. What do people do who can't work from home and their businesses won't allow them to be out for 2 weeks or more? Most people need their weekly paycheck.

I certainly wouldn't be trusting anyone saying it will just go away , or we will have a vaccine in a matter of months , or just keep going to work everything will be fine.

Well, yes there are cases like this but if you are dead then the job didn’t matter anyway, no? I believe we’ll hear about the federal stimulus package at 9pm?

This is a prime example of why everyone should have some savings and not blow it all every paycheck. I saw a stat recently that something like 80% of America doesn’t have $1000 in the bank to absorb an unforeseen circumstance.

This is a whole other issue which is quite large in the US.

The current statistic is that 78% of Americans say they live paycheck to paycheck.

Business as usual here in Phoenix, no shortages, no lines, still selling and fixing exotic cars, from Italy no less, still getting parts shipped to us.
Everyone is just being aware and behaving appropriately.
Restaurants and malls still busy, traffic is the same.
If it is really that bad my friends hiding in your house isnt going to save you.

According to the latest models, 20 to 60% of the population will get it. The fight is now to flatten the curve, so that our hospitals (ICUs) would not get overwhelmed with the # of patients, which is what is happening in Italy right now.

There is already a #flattenthecurve hashtag on social media.

PS. People in Italy were also downplaying the danger just ... 3 weeks ago. We have to learn from their mistakes.

Like David I believe we are getting mixed messages however I also agree that we need to do what the CDC advises and there does need to be some uniformity here

Things are getting testy here and I apologize if I were part of the reason. I am of the same opinion of all of you. Let's stay calm and follow the advice given to us. I believe we are all on the same side and I do hope that some guidance will come in this country from the CDC rather than from national organizations or local communities

Dave, What you are saying about the mixed messages was yesterday. Everyone, the press, the cdc, the federal and local governments this afternoon and tonight are pretty much all on the same page. This is just starting, we're in for a long ride.

I am not getting political, just factual. Yesterday the POTUS said “Stay calm and it will go away.” This seems like a different message than what Fauci said today.

The director of CDC (USA Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), Dr. Redfield, Coronavirus expert Dr. Fauci earlier testified. I listened to what they had to say with the utmost attention.

Norman,

I look at your numbers that you ran and then I watch this guy and it seems like such a difference in opinion.

Michael Osterholm is an internationally recognized expert in infectious disease epidemiology. He is Regents Professor, McKnight Presidential Endowed Chair in Public Health, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP), Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Division of Environmental Health Sciences, School of Public Health, a professor in the Technological Leadership Institute, College of Science and Engineering, and an adjunct professor in the Medical School, all at the University of Minnesota. Look for his book "Deadliest Enemy: Our War Against Deadly Germs" for more info. https://amzn.to/2IAzeLe

What his running of the numbers say is:

48 million hospitalisations
96 million cases
Over 480,000 deaths

If you watch this for the first five minutes or so I would be interested on your opinion. Just trying to get a clear picture.

I can't help but feel that Italy, Iran, Sth Korea and China have different diseases. Why did Italy cases explode and front runners like Japan, Thailand and Singapore didn't????

IMO one of the reasons CDC does not recommend wearing a mask are ... supply shortages. There are just not enough masks on the market. Chineese doctors strongly recommend wearing masks and they have more experience than basicly anyone else.

I have bought 40 3M N95 masks. Since they are one time use, I'm considering getting some more ... when I still can. The price in Poland have already went up from $3 to $5 per mask within a week.

'Cos those countries have been much better prepared, thanks to SARS pandemic a few years back.

People in Italy on the other hand, were largely downplaying the danger ... until it was too late (which is almost always the case, when a disease spreads exponentially).
