My last word on masks, hopefully. Wearing a mask in many countries is not habitual, I get it. There is, unfortunately, a worrying trend of people, especially on social media, to try and be anti-establishment and show off saying I never wear a mask as though it makes you brave (We have lots here and you would have though they would have learnt by now). It doesn’t. The crucial issue here is source control. If you don’t know whether you are infected, and most cases will probably show no symptoms, then it is your duty not to spread the disease.
It’s that simple. We have just had a case of a Cathay Pacific flight attendant who didn’t know she was infected now turning up positive. They all wear masks as per norm which hopefully might have limited the spread on the plane but what if she had been all Fung ho about it and said that she followed the CDC recommendations? Good luck to those passengers. The advice is plain and simple wrong for a disease that can spread asymptomatically..
If you have to go out then the best way not to spread it is to wear a mask. Governments all over the world have a responsibility to ensure that their health services have enough masks. We did too. We were advised by the government not to wear masks but our public is not stupid. All the experts countered this recommendation and the government shut up. We have very few cases even though we are part of China and that is more than likely due to heightened awareness of the population, something that was seriously lacking in Italy and Iran and South Korea. Folks in the US have had months to prepare and unfortunately very little was done and no one took it seriously, still many don’t judging from the comments on this thread. Unfortunately the US is big, it has a big population and the masses are somewhat difficult to convince of these measures which is why it will flare up seriously but there is still a small window of opportunity. Civic responsibility is important during pandemics. Learn from those places who were succcessful in containment. I am not being alarmist at all. These are simple measures. Read up on masks if you don’t know which to get but I can tell you that as fr back as January when I was sourcing masks from the US, supply was scarce indeed due to China mopping up the global supply. I hope you folks have enough to go around. Social distancing is a very useful method of source control as well and luckily it’s free. Stay home and enjoy music until it blows over. Good luck.
