Does the Audiophile Community Have a Problem?

Go meet a person, get friendly, then come back online and don't praise his system to high heaven. Try saying anything less than superlative. The vitriol will follow
Well that is one negative about becoming a “listening room”, the floor is opened up much more to negative interpretations. For the most part I have strong enough sense of self not to be offended. Several friends were kind they held their criticisms of my prior system until it was gone (and by which time I came to understand the limitations of that rig myself.)

Yes that's the way it usually works, people tell after the previous component has been removed. Many times the audiophile understands it himself later and you just nod and add.

I think this attitude may be exactly why there are so few women in the hobby.

Members may need to change how they post and interact to satisfy the decorum and cordiality standard of WBF.

Did it occur to a logician such as yourself that the "personal choice" decision by women not to participate in the hobby might be the result of men's attitudes toward women in the hobby?

Did it occur to a forum baron such as yourself that maybe you don't know anything about women.

I think you should change your avatar back to what it was.

No Ron, they are not interested because they don't dwell on gear and find the discussions boring. I see it with the wives of all my hifi buds, even the wives that are uber tolerant, still think it is a stupid and meaningless hobby...

I actually had a girlfriend once that was interested in it...she was a professional violinist, but still didn't want to talk about it...she did; however, go to shows with me and enjoyed hearing different systems. She was appalled at how many sounded nothing like real music, which I found quite amusing as she was pretty open to the person demoing that their sound sucked.

How about we flip the coin. Stop asking why are women not into this hobby. Why don't we find a women forum that is under served by old men and en mass join and participate.

As I was amusing myself with the thought, my mind went to, would they even want our participation. I highly doubt they would.
Many of the women I know don't seem to have real hobbies outside the family itself...that seems to be their hobby!

I think woman have learned to enjoy music without the endless changes we do. heck my main rig has not been on in months I use desktop and earbuds mostly. I’m planing on making a new room so not ready to keep trying now

Couple of years ago my teenage daughter attended Capital Audiofest with me. She enjoyed attending CAF and her comments on the show were captured by David Blumenstein from Dagogo (not sure if he is a member here or not plus I do not know his forum id here if he is a member, so cannot tag him) - https://www.dagogo.com/room-323-behind-music/

Since, than she has attended couple of other shows with me including the both CAF and Florida one and her comments were similar. She definitely has an opinion on what she likes and does not like and what she sees as an issue :D

I have a 15 year old son trying to get him into it. i ask him questions on the car radio. is a real piano and such. he plays a few instruments too. But to play and do what we do are not the. i also think those who play don’t observe like we do.

Can be a different skill set.

Yep, we tend to over analyze instead of listening and enjoying :)

I asked you a serious question about causality, and you reply with this?

How would you grade the substantive quality and logical quality of this reply according to the analytical framework you laid out for all of us in Post #37 of the "Cordial Participation in Terms of Service 2" thread:

1. Identification of the logical fallacies of the statement(s) or argument If you do not or cannot explain the flaws in the logic of a claim or argument, then do not state that 'their logic is dumb'. Logic is not a matter of one's individual preferences but a fairly codified set of guidelines. For example: a straw man argument, or presuming the truth of a conclusion in one's premises (aka ' begging the question'). Logic is not about facts but about how we arrive at conclusions - the 'rules' of argument if you will.

2. Carefully address statements you believe are wrong or false or misleading. IOW, fisk them. Fisking is a written argument where one person sequentially addresses each point of an of another person's argument

The above is so much more entertaining and educational than exposing one's inability to communicate with cheap insults.

CANCEL HIM!! He has violated Section 21 Part C subsection 432 of the snarkiness code.

The above paper explains why there are more men than women interested in hifi equipment as well as any hobby that is focused things rather than people.
It's innate in the same way that men are less agreeable than women (by about two standard deviations) and women are more prone to trait neuroticism by about the same degree. These differences appear to be biological since the same differences are found across all cultures and, interestingly, across all the higher primates.
