Giant killer: The magnus ma-300

Hi Porselen,

I use the Gryphon Colosseum stereo (dual mono).

I use PAD Dominus/Anniversary Contego Cables on everything except: Gryphon VIP Reference PC on the Gryphon Colosseum...in addition to coming with the unit when i acquired it 2nd hand, and also to being 20amp and manufactured by Gryphon, it also fits underneath the unit (a PAD cable would not). I also use Sablon Audio Gran Corona on Oppo and Velodyne...exceptionally good and extreme value for money.

I just competed my cable upgrade. Jena Labs Twin 19's on the speakers, Purist Audio Proteus Provectus interconnects and Purist Canorus power cables.

Nice! Congrats!!!

Thanks Lloyd. I wish I could spring for the 25th Anniversary cables!

Don't worry...if you elect not to get them 2nd hand...there's always the 30th Anniversary, and the 35th and the 40th...;) and so goes this great passion of ours!

Last impressions of the MA-300

It just plays music! You have a sense of beeing there; everything flows natural, yet detailed, full and totally grain free. Congratulation Magnusaudio!
Cant wait for the pre to be released...................

P.

marinjim, how do you fint the Canorus cables? what did you measure it against?

Awesome A/C cables. I compared them against Odin cables. For speaker cables I use Jena Labs Pathfinder 19's because of their sound, and I got a great price.

I use Fusionaudio; extremely airy and fluent. (the producer also sells Purist....I have not asked him how they compete with Canorus though........)

any news to the new Ma-500?

No, not yet. But at 900 wpc @4oms, it is a killer. If it sounds any better than my MA-300, I might have to upgrade.

update: I was going to sell my Magnus MA-300 to fund a SE tube amp, but instead upgraded the capacitor board to the new MA-500 one. Talk about a major upgrade, I am shocked how much of an improvement this upgrade has made. Instead of 4 huge caps, there are now 16 smaller ones. More power, presence, detail, immediacy, deeper soundstage. I know Magnus Audio (Parent Company is Canary Audio) is little known because the do not advertise or go to shows, but one of their newer amps will be one of Srajan Ebaen's staff.

Congrats...those are always nice suprises! I presume it cost you a lot less than selling Magnus and funding an SE tube amp? I will say, a massive Magnus amp is quite a different beast than an SE tube. What speakers are you driving again?

I have the Venture CR-8 Signature with Reference Signature 3- 8" drivers x4. I seem to mod my gear rather than buy and sell lately. ;)

Well, that is what happens when you have great equipment! Nice speakers!! Enjoy.

Thank-you LL. And your speakers are not too shabby either.

Could you really have driven these with SET tubes?

They are 89db, and yes, I found out not too many semi powerful SETs out there, but I thought 50 watts or so could do the trick.

Ah...yes, that makes sense. There are a few SETs with that kind of power. makes sense.
