Is Wilson losing their marketing edge?

A few industry insider folks have told me that Wilson is "growing" Daryl Wilson to take over the company. I hope he turns into a great leader. Does anyone know anything about him? Is he an engineer? A manager? Does he have passion for audio, or will he be an Edgar Bronfman and sell the company?

I can't answer your question when it comes to "growing Daryl" simply because I do not know.

However, I do know Daryl very well (as he is my brother), and I can tell you that he most definitely has a passion for audio.

Since you were curious of Daryl's background, here is a quick overview:

• His degree is in International Business
• He currently is Wilson Audio’s Project Manager of New Product Development in R&D – he keeps track of the nuts and bolts of projects from day one to the first pair shipped. He works closely with our father (David Wilson) on pretty much a daily basis.

Daryl has been a part of Wilson Audio since it was operated out of our California home as a child (simple tasks such as twisting wires in the garage and packing vinyl records, etc.). Over the years he expanded his contributions in the company, and has worked in the following departments:

• Fabrication shop
• Quality Control
• Production – including Night Shift Forman
• Inventory Assistant
• Customer Service

His apprenticeship to with our father started in the R&D during the final development of the Puppy 7. Since then, he has been a part of the development for these products:
*All products listed here are those that our father and Daryl worked on together side by side, and with the rest of Wilson Audio’s R&D team.

o Duette
o Sophia 2
o WATT/Puppy 8
o Maxx 2
o Alexandria 2
o Surround 2
o Center 2
o Thor’s Hammer
o Maxx 3
o Polaris
o Sasha
o Sophia 3
o Mezzo
o Center 3
o Alexandria XLF
o Wilson Audio Application Suite (Daryl developed)

I recently talked with Terry because I was interested in possibly auditioning spectral with wilson's. he told me when he picked up spectral, wilson dropped him and went to another area store that sold mid fi and that his audio research business went there too. He also told me that there ws no comparison to Audio Research and Spectral, that there have been no advances in tubes since 1960 and spectral would cream audio research. He also told me Wilson's had no emotion compared to Magico's. I am just wondering if i can trust this guy.

Thanks
Rick

It's sort of like going to an orthodontist and ask if you need braces. :)

Ha! And here at WBF Caesar started this thread and, amongst other things, stated the opposite. Steve, what's your line about one man's passion?

In holland they advised to take spectral with avalon and that spectral needs MIT cables to sound their best , " totallly by coincidence " these brands are imported by the same importer.

It is not by coincidence, it was an existing partnership - at a time there existed MITSpectral cables, approved by Spectral. Taken from Goodwin's site:

MIT Spectral Cables

MIT makes special speaker cables for use with Spectral amplifiers. These cables provide the correct electrical environment for the proper and safe operations of the amplifier. Because Spectral amplifiers have a bandwidth that extends into the megahertz region, they require a special pole arrangement in the network box of the MIT speaker cable. The speaker cables also provide the proper output inductance for the amplifier. Spectral guarantees their amplifiers only when used with approved MIT speaker cables. The following cables are specifically labeled "Spectral." With some Spectral amplifiers, you may also use certain other models the MIT Reference series speaker cables. Please feel free to consult us for specific recommendations.

Note: Only Spectral's amplifiers require these cables. Their preamplifiers, D-A converts, and CD Transport may be used with any desired cable, including non-MIT cables. However, for sonic reasons, we still recommend MIT Spectral interconnects cables in these applications.

I do not know about the current situation.

What ive found was a simple electronic circuit to cut bandwith both following a different approach to cut off high freq .
I am not getting the point here , spectral has a amp which supposedly can amplifly a very high bandwith signal , only to be cut off by the mit cable .
This mix is then gonna give a pure signal.
Most tweeters cant even reproduce a 30 khz signal -3 dB

Points to consider...
Innovative in NYC has carried both Spectral and Wilson Audio, and Innovative is one of our top dealers.
Music Lovers in SF, another top dealer carries Spectral and Wilson Audio.

Sorry I misspoke, he said when he picked up Magico, Wilson dropped him

To say that Wilson Audio dropped a dealer because they carry Spectral for my mind is somewhat ludicrous and I would have to bet that the dealer isn't forthcoming with the "whole story". Also as Debbie points out Music Lovers in Berkeley is a huge Wilson/Spectral dealer. I have been to that store countless times and heard many Wilson/Spectral setups.

Gentlemen I believe that stories such as these are the things that serve no purpose and only contribute to urban legend in this industry. Thanks to Debbie for reminding us of what the reality is. To quote 3rd hand information without all the facts can serve no good purpose.

I've heard Wilson and Spectral at Music Lovers as well. Nice combination...

I'm listening to a Spectral DMA 260 through Sasha's with upper tier MIT cables as I type and can say that it is simply amazing. Honestly, I cannot imagine too much better. To me, it sounds as if all of these components were meant for one another, perfect synergy and stunning sound.

AT the risk of sounding flippant Wilson will sound good with almost anything that has the juice and stability to power them..
I have heard Wilson sounding good with

Arc
Conrad Johnson
VTL
Lamm
Mark Levinson
Mac Intosh
Jadis
Krell
Quicksilver
Halcro
Boulder
Spectral
Goldmund
Boz amplifers
MBL
Emotiva
And ..... Yes..... people Sony Receivers at some CES ..

The better the front end and amplification, of course, the better the sound but darn it! Wilson sounded like Wilson .. We audiophiles are in the habit/hobby/compulsion to look for that last iota of performance and to eternize on perceived or imagined perceived differences .. It won't stop but these speakers of which I am not necessarily a fan do consistently sound good on a wide variety of electronics ...

Frantz, I am a little surprised that Krell is not amongst that list.
