LampizatOr Horizon - Tube Rolling Paradise

I believe it's necessary to use two C3Gs similar to 6J5s where two of them make up the gain of one 6SN7.

V2 comes with a Shroud - looks better and doesnt affect the sound. The shroud is placed over the adaptor once tehe adaptor is in place and then you attach the tube to the adaptor. Any thoughts? the white line in the photos is the flash. the unit is all black
Now you have your creative hat on. My thought is if you could come up with something like Harry Potter and the Cloak of Invisibility it would be perfect ........Ian check your email

yes indeed 1 tube just doesnt get the gain:)

This is the adapter I used Ian. To be fair to the seller, he did say that I should buy the dual version but I tried to avoid the fugliness. Generally speaking, the dual adapters are used when you replace a dual triode with a single triode (like the 6j5 Etor mentioned) to pass a differential / xlr signal rather than to get more gain. The latter should only be 3db? When I tried the single, I was having to dial in more like 30db less attenuation and it literally did seem like the source was on the other side of the Atlantic.

Dual tube is good Mark:) was the tube measuring good though when you used it as single? Maybe low measurements?

c3g tube has 6 times higher amplification, an optimal working point would be 150v anode/ 20ma current or 200v anode/12ma current then it would be very loud compared to a 6sn7. below that, the distortions will increase sharply. can sound very analog and warm because below 10mA current are then in the kink of the triode characteristic.

My feeling is that the adapter was unsuitable for my application and responsible for the attenuation. The tubes were supposedly strong and the volume was consistent in both channels. New dual adapters are on order and I’ll report back on them in a few weeks time.

For those keeping track of these things, my Tak 274b failed today. Purchased 8/22. Used about 80% of the time. FWIW, it sounded great up till the point of failure.

Thanks for bring that up. I am investigating this. Was received 8/20/2022 so well under a year. I’ll report back when I receive a disposition.

My new Tak 274b failed after 3 months of use last year. According to the distributor, i was supposedly the first field failure they had. Fortunately, it was replaced under warranty, However, that is one reason I sold the replacement quickly. Failure of a 50 year old, $100 tube is understandable. Failure of a $1200 new tube? Not so much.....

Alex of Alex Sound has promptly replied and has graciously agreed to accept the returned dead tube and will likely replace with new, once the factory approves. Can’t ask for better support.

I estimate 1500 hrs. Of use prior to catastrophic failure.

Having dissected tubes, it’s a wonder they work at all, considering the duress these super thin conductors endure. There is some risk involved.

Replacement with new is a value consideration, especially for one year. I have a pair of new production WE 300b with a five year warranty, which was a consideration when purchasing. I want to run them just to test the warranty, lol, but currently don’t have an amp to run them with.

The other 100 tubes I have on hand had warranties that expired an average of 65 years ago. I wish I had a warranty, but the OEM’s have passed on.

I'm curious - when it died, how exactly did it fail?

Something about "catastrophic failure" sounds more dramatic than I'd normally expect...

LOL, no real drama. On start up a wisp of white-blue light appeared at the top of the envelope. The pixie tubes did not illuminate, the tube was cold, no sound. Catastrophic meaning abrupt and final, but no other consequences.

I envision the catastrophic failure something like this ;)

That was me melting in a dramatic fit after realizing my $1200 tube died. But let’s not talk about that ;)

Sounds like there was a short at the top of the tube:)

Anyone have an explanation for why the count down numbers come on later with the RGN recti?
