LampizatOr Horizon - Tube Rolling Paradise

Hi all - new Horizon 360 owner! Ok, I’m a bit obsessed about tube rolling. The H360 came with Chinese reissues - and thought - hey, I can do better than that. Rolled to NOS RCA Red Special drivers and KR KT88 and Takatsuki 274b rectifier.

I just purchased NOS WE 350B and a WE 274A - to go with the RCAs.

So - how am I doing so far. I’m a fan of Jazz - prefer an organic sound stage with controlled bass.

I might as well ask here. Anyone had a chance to compare the Valvo G2504 solid plate vs. black mesh versions? I’m familiar with the plate from 100 hours with it in a GG3, before it crapped out (a second time). I’m wondering if the black mesh is a comparable alternative. Thanks.

Some on this thread have made the comparison and the verdict seems to fall in favour of the mesh plate. I have and have compared the Telefunken RGN2004 mesh vs solid plate tubes. I like both, with a slight preference for the mesh. I also have the Valvo G2504 solid plate rectifier, which is an excellent choice too. Good linear control which shows up in the mids and middle highs.

The mesh one is warmer and more relaxed a bit. Both are nice

TFKN RGN 2004 Mesh plate

Valvo G2504 Solid Plate

My preference

On Marty's recommendation and generosity, I tried the Valvo AZ12 as an alternative to the G2504, and found it preferable to the TFKN mesh plate (both with TP adapters).

The Valvo G2504 solid plate at 100 hours showed signs of being even another half step up. I'd love to find another floating around, this time from someone who stands behind what they sell.

I use a Valvo AZ12 black mesh now as well. I actually prefer it in my system to the Valvo G2504 solid plate. Plus it’s whole lot less $$$$

Does the AZ12 require an adapter?

If you need an adapter for the AZ12 to fill in, Marty sent me a few of the Chinese ones. I think I’ve got at least two that are usable (I’m in the States). He preferred it, and it’s not bad, but I prefer the TP.

I think it was also Marty who told me that Laszlo prefers the AZ12 too.

Mine’s a solid plate. Looks like someone grabbed a mesh plate off eBay today for ~$250.

What is it you like about the AZ12 mesh over the G2504 solid plate? At 100 hours with the latter, I noticed that the sound stage wasn’t quite as wide, and the pitch was elevated, sort of like everything was in the key of E vs. C, although that seemed to be starting to narrow. Otherwise, a very exciting, listenable tube.

I found the real McCoy is the Valvo AZ12 black mesh . Maybe the difference you hear is due to solid plate

As for the Chinese ada[tors, personally I take a pass on those. TP are the real goods and one has to understand these tubes and the DAC's are very expensive. I ve read about a few here going up in smoke due to a potentially faulty adapter. Personally, Im not willing to take that chance

as to the G2504 solid plate vs the AZ12 mesh plate......first off they are both excellent. The AZ12 to my ears is not as bold a sound as the G2504 and TBH if one has one but not the other you will be very satisfied. I have not heard the G2504 mesh plate and TBH I'm good with that. I've picked my poison and have sufficient back up sets that will last me my entire life time. I also have several sets of TFKN RGN2004 mesh plate globe

I’ve never heard the AZ12 mesh. But yes, the G2504 plate is bold, very present, without being forward or aggressive. The touch of warmth helps. But different systems, rooms and tastes. I was offering Chinese adapters to anyone who might want to fill in the time between tube and TP arriving. One taker already. I’ve had a TP adapter go bad, but w/o causing damage.
