Lampizator Valve / Tube Rolling Review Thread

This morning I rolled in the WE 275A and 422 combo which I haven’t listened to for a while. After a couple hours I swapped out the 422 for the Acme 274B. I have concluded that the 422 isn’t a really good match for the 275As and maybe just not a great rectifier for any set of DHTs in the Pacific. I find that the sound lacks weight and just feels thin.
Have you tried to combine the 275A with more robust sounding output tubes like maybe some 300B or even PX25?

I assume you mean combining the 422 with a 300B or PX25. This is on my list of things to try. The 275A is like a mini 300B but I know each combination is different.

What did you think of the ACME 274B?

Very nice rectifier. Soon I will be able to compare it more closely to the Tak 274B. In the past I have felt they are very similar with a slight edge to the Tak.

Where to you source your ACME’s in USA?

I will have to check. It has been a couple years and the number of dealers has decreased. I may not have bought it from a US retailer.

Sorry, my mistake :oops:

Certainly I meant combine the 422 Recti (you found inferior in combination with the 275A) with more robust sounding 300b or PX25 to countersteer the 422 leanness

Of those two, I much prefer the Takatsuki 274b :cool:

I just ordered a balanced Big 7 MKII today, E53 engine with VC and 5 position heater switch option.
Thanks to Rob at LampiNA for his help as well as all the owners/ posters here -I’ve been immersed in these threads for quite some time now.

I was somewhat torn between the Atlantic TRP and Big 7 MKII but ultimately decided to spend more to gain entry to the DHT world.

I have some time while my build is completed to continue to research tube rolling options- keep up the good work guys!

Thanks again.

Charles

Hi Charles;

I'm glad you made this step and I'm sure You'll love the outcome.
Here I might help you a bit regarding tube choice as a friend of mine had a same dilemma (TRP or B7mk2) and decided to take B7 due to the exact same reason as you did. His unit is SE no VC but with the heater selector as you ordered. Tube wise I have no idea which ones you'll receive, but I've sent to my friend several options to try namely: 01a, 112a, PX25RK, 45 NOS and he had on hand EML PX4 and 300b and in his system and for his ears best performing one is PX4 so he's sticking with those. All output tubes he tried with Philco 5u4g from early '50s which for him is a keeper recti.
I hope this might serve you as a small starter guide.

Cheers;
G
