I have and in the dark too. Not quite the same as being in the dark on both. Something about that blindfold. Now if we are going to listen with blindfolds then I relent.
I recently covered up my Pass XS amps blue lights with black tape. I always have the bias meter lights turned off. Dark or very dim is my room/listening preference too.
Is it better at night yes. There is just less ambient noise. Is it better in the dark, Hardly once I got room, power, grounds right. I place this audio myth with DBT'S. IMHO, of course.
when we access our deep memories we automatically (1) look up and defocus our eyes, or for even deeper memory search we (2) close our eyes. both of these reflexes allow our brain a bit more ability to access thoughts as it removes a level of input information......the noise level to our brain is reduced.
how light affects our brain input works the same. in lower light our other senses are sharper. it's evolution at work. those of us who did not listen, feel, and smell better in low light had a tendancy to get eaten.
i do agree that one can get the same performance anytime which some of us only have at night. i'm in a barn away from my house in the middle of 5 acres, in the mountains, with an isolation transformer. i'm basically completely off the grid of civilization noise. yet; i still hear better in dim light.
My preference is for dim lighting. Strongest preference is for indirect lighting. When you live with preamps without remotes or have remotes that aren't backlit, dark is tough!
