Modern speakers vs Vintage speakers

Personal Ranking 1"driver
1. Tad 2001
2. B&C de250
3. Beyma Cp380
4. Radian 475

I had them all here to test, distortions mostly come from the crossover use good resistors, capacitors and coils. here the best resistors change the sound dramatically with heatsink 10 watt.

Interesting ranking. Coincidentally just a few days ago I compared TAD 2001 to a Pioneer PD-801 on the same model horns. Considering the PD-801 is the predecessor to the 2001, I was surprised by how different the drivers sound. I preferred the warmer and more dynamic mids of the Pioneer; my son (who owns them) preferred the TAD. He says he hears a bit more detail with the 2001. (For what it’s worth, I also prefer his 4001 on an Emilar horn to the 2001.)

I definitely agree about the importance of attenuation resistors. I haven’t heard of the ones you linked but they look similar to Caddocks that I tried. Of all the different resistors I’ve used on my midrange and HF horns, including Duelund CAST and Path Audio, my favorite is Mills 12w wirewound which is available in custom values at 1% tolerance and also happens to be quite inexpensive.

The TAD 4003 is quite superior to the 4001 and 2001. The 2002 also to the 2001 and used as upper frequency to the 4001 and 4003.

Leif and his fellow Vikings have done more research on these drivers than anyone I have heard of

You could be right. I have never heard the 4003 or 2002. I lost interest in 1” and larger drivers when I moved to WE 32A horns which have a narrower throat. I listened to several drivers on the 32A including GIP 555 before settling on YL Acoustic 5500G.

What is your horn design? What bass?

Manganin resistors are 100% non-magnetic, they are foil resistors. it all sounds much cleaner.
Mills are really good, I use them for power supply and anode resistors for tube amps
Here is a video of how distortions change when you open the rear horn drivers. You can see this very well in the spectrogram.

WE 32A with YL driver coming in at 700Hz. EV T-350 horn tweeter with 7K crossover. Bass is Jensen P15LL in open baffle. I posted a photo of the speakers somewhere in this thread.

If you can, videos playing classical, please

OK, I just made a video using my phone, but I am having trouble attaching it to a forum post. When I try to attach a file and I click on Photo Library, the video isn't there, only still photos. I am using an IPhone 8. Any tips on how to do this?

From Lord Haw Haw to Adele ... What a very curious world we live in !

Thanks. A cell phone video is pretty low-fi but at least you can tell it works.
Exactly. Also, any video will be low-fi on a computer, tablet, or phone.
