Modern speakers vs Vintage speakers

Hardly lose any money? Where's the fun, or audiofool stripes, in that?
Ked, I'll make a deal w you. I need to hear these in a different room and setup, and that's a principle of yours, to hear things you like in more than one setting. And you need a system that fits a traditional London setting.
So, as a 100% fan of Tom's ethos, and I'm sure w the means to make it happen, you set up this second setup, I'll be queuing at your door to hear it.
Two birds w one stone, you get a setup you know outperforms for the price, I get confirmation it isn't a one off and can be replicated.

I have heard his with different electronics. I have heard westlower's similar Tannoy 12 inch golds in London, in a smaller room, they are smaller overall, so less power, but similar tonal and other characteristics. And I have heard a 15 inch gold in Glasgow, on a Sony 8000 (same deck that UK Paul had when you liked his MLs) and SME V and lower phasemation model, low priced luxman integrated amp. Nothing fancy, right up against the front wall. Heard them for almost 8 hours with lots of blues, jazz, rock, because the guy owned great LPs of those. Those golds were slightly better for rock and a bit less for classical, due to a plumper midbass, while Tom's is better for classical. But otherwise were quite similar. Also heard RFC Paul's, he is the guy who mods all these

At that time I found the Tannoy SRM 15 "monitor impressive, like bringing a stage into the listening room. It was carved out of stone, nothing sounded fuzzy, the musicians were in their seats a great advantage of coax speakers. I know some Models from Tannoy discolor slightly never really bothered me because they are just fun and the most important thing is listening to music, I think Tom will have fun that I can understand.

the little red and super red monitors used to be in almost every recording studio in great britain. if they weren't good they wouldn't have been used.;)

Tom’s Tannoys aren’t just a pair of Tannoys. Cabinet is custom made with solid Sapele by a carpenter in U.K and crossover is totally revised and external. This is a different animal.

The new 75 anniversary model from klipsch.

I've heard Klipsh'es in quite a few settings, and I totally get why some people love them, but very different to Tannoys in all sorts of ways. I suspect personal preference is likely to swing strongly one way or the other.

On Bill's point, the weakest links in most Tannoys from most eras are the cabinets (seldom really optimised - Tannoy's founder Guy R Fountain famously said 'We aren't in the furniture business' and the company paid scant attention to cabinet quality for decades) and the crossovers (likewise, seldom optimised either in terms of components or indeed for the specific driver, but rather for ease of manufacture to work across a range of speakers with minimal rework - this remains an issue, even if modern cabinets are much better than vintage ones).

A friend and fellow poster here who has known my system well over many years says the biggest single uprgrade I ever made was the Reference Fidelity Components crossover. Paul Coupe really does know his stuff when it comes to optimising what you can get out of Tannoy drivers, vintage and modern.

Bill, nothing this simply good can ever be simple Lol.
Every audiophile with a beyond exemplary sound, has unique approaches and non "off the shelf" options.
The ultimate sound is as much the owner's journey and decisions along the way, as the end product.
Whole greater than sum of parts.
Eg, Tom's Permali plinth Thorens 124...it's by far my fave ever idler presentation, simply spectacular.
That was part of the mix yesterday, not "just" the Tannoys.

Important for a Thorens, the plinth must be acoustically dead and absorb background noise from the Thorens. My plinth is made of beech plywood, filled with sand lead shot. 3 layers of roofing lead. 70 pounds

To me I believe tannoy are the best speakers to come from England.
A lot good speakers comes from britain, Harbeth, Spendor , B&W , Tannoy , KEF, LS 3/ 5A and Acoustic Energy.
My two best Speakers i have heard from Britain
