Modern speakers vs Vintage speakers

I can certainly hear the difference between their previous beryllium tweeter and the newer silk dome. ... or, dagnabit, maybe I'm just hearing the marketing. My wife calls me 'eagle ears'.

Eagle ears and bat eyes?

Bats usually live in a black background, too

My vintage speakers from the 50s seem to be able to play very loud with little strain and minimal distortion. At least to my subjective perception. I don’t know how much power they can handle but there seems no reason to find out when they operate beautifully on a few SET watts.

It sounds to me like increased power handling ability has become necessary with modern speaker designs. I don’t know if it’s an advancement or simply a response to modern speakers. I suppose it depends on your perspective. Thank you for your response.

Drivers used in theaters in old days used to address 1000 people with 3 watts (availability of amps in those days), so such drivers should be able to play loud on low power. Some drivers started blowing up with later SS designs and so drivers had to be changed to handle those designs. With Tannoys in 70s drivers started to change to take more SS power but lost efficiency.

I don't recall eagles' hearing being all that good, certainly not like their eyesight.

I think it was an analogy, but you can negotiate with her. :)

Every February in the dead of Winter we go to Prairie du Sac to see some 15 or so bald eagles fishing by a large dam. It's one of the few spots on the river where the water is open as it comes off the dam - everywhere else is frozen. The trout are big but the bald eagles with their 7ft wing span are bigger with the power to snatch one from the roiling pour off.

the little early 50-ies backup Klangfilm amp (KL204a) I'm currently using already pushes out 7 Watt (Single ended), 3 watts typical power output was likely more going back to the thirties.

the rectifiers shine so beautifully 1000watt from sixties

Nice, my new tube amps also use mercury filled rectifiers (work in progress) but they won't put out anything close to 1000Watt.

the philips amp runs 3500v anode voltage, the output transformers are filled with wax for insulation. Amazing buid in the sixties.

which tubes are used? I am clairaudient then:)

we'll be auditioning a couple of candidates, nothing fixed yet...PL519 is the tube, Love the mesh sound.

i love anode caps tubes, a little schematic 11-13 watt
change the power supply unit and rectifier as required;)

Actually, the Anode is only there for show in this design...we'll be using the screen as mesh anode ;-) following Cees Brakenhoff's find.

had the transformers left over, something built quickly, if you take Pl 519 then telefunken are more stable. Have fun and good luck;)

What was the application of this amp?

david
for stadiums or large events, class b 1000 watts 8/16 ohms. I know someone who converted it to 340 Class A triode watts. sounds good;)
you need 3 x 220volt mains supply
