New Album & The Beginning of Basketball Season

It's going to give them a great chance to repeat

Definitely. Will Allen replace Chalmers as starter? So Heat will have 5 3-point bombers - Allen, Chalmers, Battier, Miller and James Jones, assuming the last four all return to MIA.

Allen took lesser money, half of Boston's offer to move to the Heat. He must be really bothered by the trade and 6th man role in Boston or, he really believes the Heat will repeat. Actually, it can be both. Other teams better shore up on their lineups, or else we might see the beginning of a Heat 'dynasty'. :D

The rich gets richer. Or the hungry became hungrier.

Heat eyes Rashard Lewis after landing Allen.

The $20m man can only make $1.35m with the Heat. If he follows Allen in taking in less money to get a ring, there will now be 5 players in MIA who took a pay cut to win a ring, including their 'big 3'. Maybe that's the secret of it all - pay cut. :D

Heat gave Ray Allen reason to again feel wanted

interesting read....

Interesing indeed, Steve.

There seems to be a 'trend' of players sulking after a rumored trade, much like what happened to Odom and in a lighter way, Pau Gasol. Unless they have a no-trade clause like Kobe and Dirk, all players should be professionals and let the GM do their jobs as they see it fit to move players around. Pierce was rumored as well to be traded for a lottery pick, and Rondo's name had come up several times too for trade with Pau. And now that cat is out of the bag re Allen's rift with Rondo, that to me, explains why Allen turned down $6m a year from Boston and signed for $3m with the Heat. That is more understandable. There would be real drama if Boston faces the Heat next season in the playoffs again.

Now that Miami will formally sign Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis within 24 hours, it just dawned on me that MIA may be starting a new concept in the NBA that will replace the triangle offense - this one, shall we say, a pentagon offense? They get to spread the floor wide and deep and find any 1 of the 5 who is open, and ALL of them can shoot from the outside. How bout that? :D

All eyes still on the Howard saga, and if he ends up playing in ORL this season, it should be a real boring year for him.

Hi

Not much to post or read but I sincerely believe that now LA is the sleeper team. A position they have bot hold for along time.. Similar to Boston Big Three Championship run ... LA have the firepower and the Basketball IQ to challenge anyone including the Heat ... now the best move would be to have a better coach . Still don't think that Mike Brown is any good, just adequate .. Yet a team with Kobe, Pau Gasol , Bynum and Nash has to be taken seriously. Any of these guys can provide you 20 points a game. The more the League focuses on the Heat and Thunder the better it will be for teams like the Lakers with potent offense and superior Playoff experience..
If we think this shortened season was good ...

Look at the bright side. There's only one ball! :)

Agreed. Lakers should be slugging it our in the Western Finals or the NBA Finals with the addition of Nash and I too believe they can beat the Heat. I still am puzzled why they didn't get Brian Shaw who is so familiar with the system of Phil Jackson. As I mentioned, I am all for teams re-tooling to stop the Heat 'dynasty'. :D

After Ray Allen reportedly felt unwanted and unneeded, now Jeremy Lin feels slighted. Suddenly we have a trending on 'onion-skins'. :D

Linsanity: Point guard irked by Knicks treatment

08:10 AM ET 07.11 | Showing Jeremy Lin the money Houston offered isn't necessarily going to make the young point guard happy. They're also going to have to patch things up with their returning playmaker. Despite expressing no reservations about matching the exorbitant Rockets' offer sheet, which can become official Wednesday with Lin's signature, the Knicks are concerned that Lin has turned a little frosty toward the organization because he feels slighted that New York didn't offer him a contract first. ... "He was surprised that the Knicks didn't make the first move," a league source said. "They know they've got to mend some fences with him because he believes what the Rockets have told him, that the Knicks weren't as interested as they are."

The Nets are officially out of the Dwight Howard chase by re-signing Brook Lopez. I think there's a good chance the Lakers will land him. If so watch out Heat

Absolutely, if DW signs in with LA, the Lakers will be a heat-seeking missile, aka the 'Heat-busters'. :) Howard will make Lebron think twice when he drives inside the lane, something that Boston or OKC didn't have, a very strong, fast and athletic center. Well, Boston didn't have a center at all actually. :D

Knicks coach says Lin will be back

By BRIAN MAHONEY, AP

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Jeremy Lin will be staying put, in New York and as the Knicks' starting point guard.

Coach Mike Woodson repeated Wednesday that Lin will ``absolutely'' be back next season and will enter training camp as the starter at his position, even with the Knicks agreeing to a deal with veteran Jason Kidd.

Lin has agreed to sign an offer sheet with the Houston Rockets for about $28 million over four years. The Knicks have said all along they planned to match any offer for their restricted free agent, and Woodson said the Knicks ``never once'' blinked at knowing they would have to pay that figure.

The offer sheet still hasn't been signed and sent to the Knicks, who would then have three days to match, so Woodson said he couldn't comment much about it, but added that ``Jeremy Lin has always been a big part of what we we're trying to do as we move forward with our franchise.''

Lin took to his Twitter page Wednesday to deny a report that he was unhappy with the Knicks for not signing him right away and forcing him to get another offer first.

He earned the starting spot in February and emerged as a breakout star before his season was cut short by surgery to repair torn knee cartilage. Woodson said Lin would go into training camp as the starter because he doesn't believe players should lose their spots because of injury, and that he would benefit from playing with Kidd.

``Jason's a veteran guy that brings leadership and I thought it would be a perfect fit for Jeremy Lin in terms of being able to tutor him as he grows as a point guard for our franchise, and Jason can still play and run a ballclub,'' Woodson said before the Knicks' summer league team practiced. ``So that's important I think as we move forward.''

The deal that will pay Kidd about $3 million annually hasn't been completed, but the Knicks did get a couple finished Wednesday on the first day players could sign.

They acquired center Marcus Camby from Houston in a sign-and trade deal and re-signed guard JR Smith. Steve Novak also has agreed to come back with a four-year, $15 million deal, but that also wasn't completed Wednesday.

The Knicks signed forward James White from Europe, but Woodson said he wasn't sure if Landry Fields would be back. The starter at shooting guard most of the last two seasons has signed an offer sheet in Toronto worth about $20 million over three years.

New York sent Toney Douglas, Josh Harrellson and Jerome Jordan and two second-round draft picks to the Rockets for Camby.

Landry Fields is no loss. Below average defense and no outside shot. Can't hit the broad side of a barn. His three pointers are always amusing to watch.

My bet is that Riley would be the Executive of the Year - next season. :D

Riley keeps getting players to sacrifice money
By TIM REYNOLDS (AP Sports Writer) | The Associated Press – 4 hours ago

MIAMI (AP) -- Upon hearing the news that Ray Allen had decided to take less money and join the Miami Heat, reigning NBA MVP LeBron James sounded less than surprised.

He knew who closed the deal.

''Pat done it again,'' James said that night.

Sure enough, Pat Riley had done it again - gotten someone the Heat coveted at a discount price.

Whether it's the lure of no state taxes, the South Florida weather, the chance to play alongside a trio of stars like James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh or some combination thereof, Riley and the Heat have figured out a way to get who they want and fit them into some pretty stringent salary parameters. The plan delivered the 2012 NBA title, and now with a sharpshooter like Allen taking essentially a half-price offer, the Heat could be heavy favorites to repeat next season.

''I just mention LeBron and Chris and Dwyane,'' Riley said, addressing his recruiting style. ''And then we take it from there.''

It's a bit more detailed than that.

The Hall of Fame coach is showing he's a master executive as well.

''He understands players and he's a winner,'' Heat guard James Jones said. ''And the guys he targets are winners''

James, Wade, Bosh, Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller signed deals worth roughly $70 million less than they could have gotten elsewhere two summers ago. Shane Battier took a discount last year, and now Allen has done the same - taking $3 million from Miami for next season as opposed to $6 million to stay in Boston. Allen's previous contracts added up to about $175 million in salary anyway, which surely cushioned his choice to leave $3 million on the table now.

By now, Riley getting deals like this done has almost become expected.

''Enthusiasm is contagious, and Coach Riley (is) a carrier,'' agent Arn Tellem wrote on his blog in 2010, when Miller - his client - sacrificed some dollars to have a chance to be part of Miami's championship chase. ''Had he not become coach of the Heat, he could have made millions by opening a chain of tanning salons in the Sunshine State. He's that good. Pat had a vision for the team, a vision that he laid out with evangelical fervor. We left the room converted.''

Riley doesn't have one sales pitch.

There was the infamous story from 2010, when Riley put his seven championship rings in a bag and dropped it before James, letting the clinking of the jewelry be a selling point for the title-starved superstar. (''Pretty cool,'' James said.) He's been known to make videos for free agents that he's wooing. With Allen, they talked about books - Riley gave him one - and discussed some quotes that Riley thought Allen would find inspiring.

It's not Riley doing all the talking. He defers to Alonzo Mourning, now a Heat executive, to talk about how players are handled. Andy Elisburg, the team's assistant general manager and manager of everything related to the salary cap, lays out the financial aspects. Micky Arison, the team's managing general partner, talks about family. Almost as if to prove the point, Nick Arison, the owner's son and now team CEO, is part of the recruiting team as well.

But in the end, Riley is the closer.

He doesn't just get players to agree to take a bit less money, but has talked some into accepting lesser roles as well. Wade, the 2006 NBA Finals MVP, gladly gave up his biggest share of the Miami spotlight to make room for James. Wade also left more money on the table than anyone else during that negotiating session in 2010 as well.

''Pat can be miraculous,'' Wade said this past season.

Consider this year's Heat free-agent haul. There was Allen, and alongside him Rashard Lewis signed for $1.35 million - again, less than he could have gotten elsewhere. But he was more than willing to take Miami's this-is-all-we-have offer because set to make another $13.7 million from having the final year of his previous contract bought out by the New Orleans Hornets.

''If we could, and had the ability to pay all the players really what they could get on the open market, we would,'' Riley said. ''We don't have that capability. So Rashard and Ray, people that are interested in coming here, they know coming in what the situation is. They want to be here, I really believe, because of the organization as much as anything. ... They see a team that has an opportunity to be a winner. And at this stage of their career, this is what it's about.''

Allen said that was the case. So did Lewis, whose last contract was worth $118 million, but didn't net him any championships. That's why he, too, will be in Miami next season.

''You can't really put a monetary value on special experience,'' Jones said. ''At some point you've accumulated enough wealth to take care of your family for eons.''
