Real Estate: Castles in Europe

Well London is a different case- a/c would likely improve the air quality.
But a hilltop in Wiltshire is a different kettle of fish

Ron could get a new pet for Tinka, the Hound Of The Baskerville.

I was just looking at Properties around France today..left, neglected and then ones up for sale that were on there last legs...
There is this Guy who tracks some down and gets on a project when possible to restore them..Here is one just story....I Had Posted this on another forum in a section thread about Architecture....

Interesting and puzzling how so many Properties here, are just left to decay.
I think this happens in Italy also...
We pass deserted homes on every road we take.
This Guy goes around to many and this one is going to be restored, to its original Beauty

Mostly because of French inheritance laws. Unless ALL the children agree what to do with the property, no individual child can sell it or I believe even live in it without unanimous agreement. All too often, one child will resist the sale, so the prperty stands empty and deteriorating sometimes for decades.

What an amazing story and passion to share!

I believe that this applies to many European countries, not only to Italy or France. These two are just the most popular among tourists, I believe. Once I've even read the story about the Belarussian government selling local palaces for a symbolic amount of money, just under the circumstance of restoration. Regrettably, it was already a few years ago and I could not find the article anymore.

The House we purchased was owned by an English Couple to renovate and make some money.
They intended, after so many years of living in France there older ages they would feel happier in the UK.
Previously the house was empty for 6+ years..Certainly was part of a farm which was divided up to smaller properties.
1801 built and the adjoining barn had the animal holding places still in situ..the floor is like large cobble stones and the ceiling in half missing...no up stairs at the present time..if ever..

Husband had to make a new main front Barn Door and very pleased with that..at the back is the original doors that will stay that way...

Two walls original stone but been updated with new fills..Two Walls a type of Snowcem
not really half as attractive as the stone ones..but hey, it is as it is..not about to change much here.
Love the Garden now, after 6+ years of a labour of love....

Whereabouts in France(?) is this?

These wooden panels look absolutely stunning! Where did you get them? Did you put them together or were they already joint?
He purchased the panels at a local DIY Store in fact they are the same panels we have used around our veggie plot..3 euros a panel which is about the cheapest type they had!..By the time he had sanded and stained them really did take on a new look..
He was a HGV Lorry Driver most of his life but took to wood in retirement. Had a good flair for it and started making anything he could think of in Wood.
Made friends with the owner of a Chicken Farm business Mantel Farm near Battle East Sussex..they have a web site and it is interesting to see the products he sells apart from Chickens...The guy took him on to help make the Chicken Houses and Runs to order..They worked so well together, although the age difference was like Father and Son...
Just a few Photos and the goat stands he made for the local Animal Rescue Centre ..Barbie Keels Animal Sanctuary near Battle also in East Sussex County.
We both worked at the Sanctuary a day a week and the owner is now very old and grumpy with people but never with the animals..typical really of these dedicated types.
Our beautiful Cat called Saber came from her Sanctuary over 15 years ago and he is in one of the photos, as he is a gem...The last Photo is a large Chateau type property up for sale near to us..
So Cheap but we all know the upkeep is going to be horrendous ....
Near Ruffec, Deux-Sèvres, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

€445,000

This beautiful château was rebuilt in the 18th century on the foundations of the former château of the Comte de Montalembert. It is packed with character features including a sweeping oak staircase and the original vaulted cellars. The château now has eight bedrooms, three living rooms, a dining room and two kitchens and there is also an attic that could be converted. The château has grounds of 7,000m² with the possibility to buy a further two hectares and there is a two-bedroom guest house, open barn and workshops.

Has a grey slate roof whilst mostly red tiles for most houses around here...
The upstairs windows have small horse statues on display. It was converted to a rental for Vacations or just for a night like B & B.

Each room is filled with antiques, and I think I read about 100 euros a night...
now it is just waiting for a new owner...keep waiting I am afraid....so many large ones on the market...
Cheers for now. Dianne

This Castle is Guedelon Castle Burgundy France...

Guedelon Castle is a project started in 1997 by Michel Guyot and Maryline Martin in the Burgundy region of France. The castle is styled on typical French medieval chateau-fort, modeled on designs from the 13th century, and is being built using techniques and materials available to masons and builders 800 years ago. The Guedelon project has now become a tourist destination, and employs dozens of workers. The castle is due to be completed in 2023.

The Funding....

Guyot built the existing château after some consideration, but began assembling funds and experts and opening negotiations with the French government to build a new castle. Over five months in 1997, Guyot raised €400,000 from the European Union, local and the central French governments, and commercial entities.

The Building...

Fascinating undertaking.
Nevertheless, it also makes me wonder if, instead of building a new / old castle, they couldn't have taken to restoring existing ones...
