I was wondering what the prevailing opinions are regarding cutting the power leads in USB and FireWire cables when using external devices that can be powered via wall-wart, etc. My reading tells me that incorporating power supply lines alongside data lines can inject noise. By isolating the power supply from the other end of the cable, noise is supposedly reduced.

Examples would be external hard drives, DACs, etc.

Any thoughts?

Locally powered USB devices are definitely preferred for DACs. For Hard Disks, as long as they power on and work reliably, then I would not care one way or the other. Using a cable with right amount of power handing is important there.
