Reviewing the Furutec Demag

Gary I just purchased the Moscode 402au.

Oops. You're right The Smokester recommended it. Like you, through Nigerian Marketplace I rediscovered Oscar Peterson and started digging deeper into his playlist.

I get to blame you for introducing me to Dee Dee Bridgewater and Marcus Roberts.

Have you heard this:

I work in a department that is research oriented. Our goal is to come up with new technologies. One thing I have found when trying to understand how something works, is that we often make the mistake that we understand ALL the variables or possibilities. We often think we know what will make something tick. When we make models in order to predict wear or durability we often find that the measurents are not precise enough. Or we find that we did not include a measurement at all. We have to be carefull that we don't get so convinced that we know all the factors or influences in a technology. I agree that we all don't hear the same. A prime example is if a person has a cold he is often heard saying my head is stuffed up and I can't hear well etc, etc. I discovered a product that claimed it improved the sound of cds. When I saw the price I just laughed. Then a friend bought the product and I must admit I gave him a hard time about it. We have many of the same discs because we often turn each other on to new artists and venues. So now he has many discs treated and I have the same discs that are not. Believe me I did NOT want to hear a difference that would justify buyng this thing. I still think the device is very expensive but it works so well that I ended up buying it. Now all my music loving, cd playing friend are taking it home and doing there cd's. They have bought me knew blades and belts. Buy now you might have figured out it is the cd lathe. I can only guess why it works and I don't have the energy nor resources to know why it works, but I can tell you this I enjoy the improvement just the same.

Oh, definitely!! I recommended this as one of my favourite CDs in another thread:

Oscar Peterson on piano, Ray Brown on bass, Louis Bellson on drums and Joe Pass on guitar.

if I said some sugar pills grow hair, I will have the Attorney Generals of half the states going after me for fraud. They would force *me* to show evidence. They would not go and conduct their own test at their expense to prove it doesn't work.

Bingo. I hope Greg can understand that because it's a critically important point of logic.

My gut reaction was that vinyl(PVC) cannot be magnetized. I found the claims of improvements in CD even less credible. The claims for cables almost laughable. Added to that their claim that they used cryogenically treated parts and even had an aftermarket cord made my eyes roll.

Excellent. The only question that remains now is what do you tell people who are certain they heard a big improvement anyway?

Why don't you tell us what you told Mike Fremer?

I had to do a double-take here. I thought I was looking at James Brown for a second.

Was not Minoxidil or Rogaine developed as a completely different reason? So was Viagara. I bet they both raised some eyebrows. Pun intended.

I do not know whether they did or did not. That's just my opinion.

We all age. A more flattering picture.

Why don't you tell us what you told Mike Fremer?

I'm sure you know what I told Fremer. :D But I asked how someone would reply after hearing a claim about hearing that he knows is impossible. Especially when he wants others to believe his own claims that defy logic and common sense.

Sure, but it was easy for them to show that those chemicals also work as erectile aids. Versus the efficacy of "demagnetizing" vinyl which nobody has shown to work, including the vendor.

If the theory is true degaussing is not the problem. Prof. Roberts thinks so or, See post #75 this thread, at least raised the issue. I would not call this proof but it may be cause for further investigation.

You know Mark, I rather not. The man represents good part of our industry and this is the language he uses to communicate: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/lofiversion/index.php/t71245-300.html

"Thanks for posting a compendium of stupidity. It's reassuring that my suggesting that people buy a nice audio system when they can afford one has not done too much "damage." I am relieved.

Your comments about my abilities to offer suggestions on budget gear indicate that your ignorance exceeds your arrogance. Your characterization of my work indicates you don't read what I write. "Observational" reviewing is not about spouting preferences. It's about attempting to describe how something sounds. How one reacts to that particular sound is an opinion. If you don't believe human being are capable of assessing sound quality and only measurements can do that, fine. That's your opinion. But you are claiming all I do is write 'opinions' of what I personally like. And that, my friend is so wrong, that I know you don't read what I write.

Yes, Mr. Salvatore did provoke me with a series of paranoid rants and attacks and I took the bait and sent him a flaming email which he chose to publish. He then continued a bitter string of attacks based upon his paranoia. So go read it and I'm sure everyone here would like to have 20 years of work judged on one screw up.

The psychiatrist line was funny, I have to admit. However I have many in my family and their behavior leaves plenty to desire. As for shoving anything up one's ass, well you should know."

:(. It is incredible to me how people think these are private discussions and not on the general internet indexed by Google for the world to find. I landed on the above thread when researching something for the Truth and Tonality thread. I have to say, as another industry person, my head is low, very low. I don't care how upset he is about the accusations made against his manhood. He owes it to us as a group to represent us well with courteous language. It is not like someone is arguing 1+1 = 5 anyway. For all he knows, those people could be more right than him at least some of the time. But even if he thinks otherwise, he needs to manage his emotions better and stay objective and professional. I could not stand reading more of his hostile back and forth after a couple of pages.

Any change in the magnetic environment of a coil of wire will cause a voltage (emf) to be "induced" in the coil. No matter how the change is produced, the voltage will be generated. The change could be produced by changing the magnetic field strength, moving a magnet toward or away from the coil, moving the coil into or out of the magnetic field, rotating the coil relative to the magnet, etc.

Ethan will just show that such an emf induced in the coil of the pick-up cartridge will be below the threshold of hearing.
