untry garden inn , Holiday inn express.
150 - 200 a night with horrible breakfast.

Luckily my company paid for it

Don’t stay the night at a Holliday Inn Express , Cedar City … Your family and friends won’t recognise you when you return !

Specifically why I have operated active crossovers. These bandying back and forth about what amps work best in which bandwidths are resolved. No need to sacrifice what works best in each frequency zone, though you wind up with a few amps lying around.

For the record, I had a powerful hybrid amp on my Apogees back in the day. Did I try a SET on them? Sure. Did it stay? No but it sounded better than expected. I used my Sphinx Project 14 mkIII throughout the speakers stay with me. I later sold them to Florian (yes Clarysis Florian) who drove them with a small Pathos Classic integrated quite successfully. It was only 70 watts but was sufficient in a modest room size.

I recommended the tubes on the pendragon ribbon tower as bass was active.

Ron’s VTLs should have plenty of power for the Clarysis speakers…

Alsyvox, being significantly more sensitive, would work better with lower power tubes.
This thread is super helpful. Thank you for the contributions. As a new owner of Alsyvox Tintoretto, I will be evaluating how the Riviera Levante drives; given there is class A 30w option and 120w into 8ohms. I am super curious what happens. I have been told that anywhere from 30-100w is ideal, and that it is likely that 100w monos would be the ideal choice but i really do not know what the ears will think. I also have been told the music genre matters a lot. Hope this is incrementally helpful.

Pre-amplifier Comparisons and Updates!

Interesting Ron! Now, experiment with other tube preamps from Aries Cerat (eg. Impera reference), Kondo KSL M77, NAT Magneto, Allnic DHT preamp and some other top tube preamps. VAC also makes some interesting preamps. Heard the Lara in the context of an all Trafomatic system playing a pair of Tune Audio Marvel speakers...I liked it quite a bit!

Thank you, Brad.

I wonder if it is the 6N30P tubes Saša uses in the Lara?

But honestly I don't have the interest to conduct such an exhaustive line stage preamplifier comparison survey. I just don't have the bandwidth to listen to almost everything.

I may be totally wrong but I have the assumption that NAT is likely to have less of a full-bodied sound than the JPS2.

I am next most interested in the JPS2, and after that I would be interested in the conrad-johnson ART88.

What is your experience with the JPS2?

Which line stage preamplifier do you think is the most tonally "dense" and full-bodied?

Ron, is matching the preamp and amplifier from the same brand necessary for you? Have you tried the Westminster Labs preamp to go along with your new amplifiers? You might be pleasantly surprised.

Necessary, no. I consider matching amp to preamp to be a presumption, as it takes some uncertainty out of the equation.

But I consider this presumption to be rebuttable in practice based on actual experience.

no

You might be right.

The Quest sounds great in Cyrus' system in Spokane, WA. The Quest sounded great in my exhibit system in the California Audio Show in Oakland.

But in general I personally like the sound of tubes.

I also like the four box Lamm preamp!

Ron,

very organic and musical preamp is Riviera APL 01se which I have been owning for the last two years. I think it has a bit of a Kondo soul, judging from a listening sessions at my friend’s house.

I have owned VTL 7.5 iii and Riviera is probably much closer to meet your criteria.

Thank you for this report!

Have you ever had occasion to compare the Riviera preamp to a Jadis preamp or to a conrad-johnson preamp?

Unfortunately not. I have owned or tried extensively alongside VTL in the last years ARC Ref 6, Allnic L 3000, Vitus L201, Aries Cerat Incito S, Dartzeel NHB 18mkii, Einstein, Ayon Conquistador and probably some others I can not remember at the moment  Riviera and Dartzeel really positively stood out. Still own both.

Ron, have you ever directly compared the Lamm LL1.1 to another preamp?

NAT preamps have a full bodied muscular sound but not a sweet fuzzy sound. Dynamics on the NAT Plasma I had were huge and soundstage was deep and wide. Great preamp actually. It was also true dual mono including the tube rectification and tube regulation it had in the power supply. One of the few pieces I wish I had kept.
Aries Cerat also has a very robust, bottom up, structural sound that also happens to have explosive dynamics with tons of resolution and detail as well. The sound is so stable that you probably never realized it was not totally stable before you hear it with an AC preamp.

I also had and loved an amazing Silvaweld SWC1000 preamp, which ultimately was on the sweeter end but damn it sounded good.

I recommended this one as well, based on what I heard at Axpona. Riviera is kind of the new Lamm.

Oooh! That comparison got my attention!
