I have never tried a silver transformer. Do you mean silver step-ups or power supply transformers ?

Either. Was just checking if you generalised silver stuff

IMO it is like anything else, it comes down to the execution of the 'technology'. I have heard silver cables that are bright sounding. Some where it is like someone shined a flashlight on the upper midrange. But there are some cables with silver wire that I would never have guessed they used silver -- Argento is an example.

I have to say a combination with both silver AND copper cables is due to my phono set up.
Silver for the tonearm cables/phono cables and copper for the balanced cable going from the phonostage to the main preamp. I have tested different combinations in the past, but this seems to be my final choice.

Agree...first experience with silver was someone's DIY. I did not know anything about the 'stereotypes' of metals in cables...but it was screechy and thin. Then I read about the stereotypes...but find myself absolutely enthused with the work of Z:Axis Audio whose cables are pure silver.

If you ever feel like DIY cable, I highly recommend this. Smooth, detailed sound, love it.

Ha! Well at least no one so far is denying that cables do have an impact on SQ. The only discussion seems to be around how much of an impact.

I thought we all agreed to take the other side of the argument this year? You know, mix it up a little.

You sound like a Jehova witness , Cable cult :) .

You want confirmation of the Siltech Double Apex golden extended diamond triple crown you just bought / were going to buy ;)

I highly doubt that.

Maybe I’m confusing what you said about Cardas cables with what you said about Benz or Grado cartridges, but I distinctly remember you describing some brand as having a very specific characteristic that you wanted in your system, and I think it was warmth. I have the same impression from my memory of how you used to describe analog versus digital or was it tubes versus solid state? Perhaps you have changed your thinking or I am mistaken.

EDIT: I found the reference. You wrote this in your Grado Epoch cartridge review:

“I describe the tonal balance of the Colibri as neutral. Neutral is not the slightly warm tonal balance I subjectively prefer.”

213Cobra visited me a couple of weeks ago. Phil has visited me numerous times, and he has never liked any iteration of my room + system. This visit was no exception, although Phil was pleased that the VTL preamp has departed. (I still think the VTL preamp is fantastic, but on the ribbons I wanted an all-tube (not hybrid) preamp. (Oh! That reminds me that both pk_LA and I both preferred the TL-7.5 Series III to the D'Agostino preamp at Brian Berdan's Audio Element in Carlsbad, CA.))

Phil preferred the sound with both pairs (one to dampen the first reflection, and one to dampen the first cross reflection) of the absorption panels removed on the side walls.

Our new posse member Robbes -- a former recording engineer -- visited again tonight, and he, too, prefers the sound with the side wall absorption panels removed. I'm not hearing what these guys are hearing, but with the absorption panels removed I am not hearing any sonic or acoustic problem. Acoustic treatment should be used judiciously and surgically to solve a particular problem. If there's no problem, then no treatment is needed.

I got those absorption panels over a year ago when I was struggling with brightness/edginess issues. I am not hearing any such issues today.

Was it Dag amp that was being used or something else

That was a different set up. Do you hear brightness issues with them removed today?

Yes; I still stand by this cartridge comment.

I like the Air Tight/Grado/Koetsu/Benz Micro/ZYX part of the cartridge sonic spectrum, not the vdH/Lyra Atlas part of the cartridge sonic spectrum.

Cartridge preference is a different thing than a desire for a wholly warm system across the board, which I do not seek.

I'm pretty sure D'Agostino amplifiers. The rest of the system was XVX and dCS Varese.

No, not at all -- which is why I kept them removed.

vdh and Lyra are very different, though on paper they are similar. AT and Zyx are similar but Koetsu is quite different
