Ron's Favorite Private Rooms + Systems of All Time

Thanks to Angie Lisi, North American distributor of Avantgarde, I was fortunate to have the opportunity today to meet Jacob Heilbrunn and to listen to his system.

Jacob played for me two different recordings of Pictures at an Exhibition. Even without a single tube in the system I think I found Jacob's room + system to achieve the most convincing reproduction of big symphony orchestra classical music I have ever experienced.

Of course I don't have a prior reference since I never heard the system before, but in addition to a room with ideal dimensions and ideal acoustic treatment I think having a Wilson Benesch infrasonic subwoofer in each corner produces an unequaled sonic foundation and achieves the sonic sensation of expanding outward the walls of the listening room.

Jacob's room + system is a grand masterpiece.
Having 4 subwoofers in each corner must be the idea of JR. He really likes the concept of DBA. He also helped me to set up 4 subwoofers around the room. The benefits are unmistakable. It is not about providing more bass. It provides solid foundation. My friends also commented the loss of foundation if I turned off the 4 subwoofers.
I think you should add 4 subwoofers in your room as your room is large enough.

A lot of sub-woofers Ron ! No pictures ?

Interesting list Ron. Four systems with horn speakers, three with large cone towers. No panels. I also think it’s interesting. How a couple horn systems are driven by fairly powerful solid state.

How does the large Clarisys system in Washington compare? I had had the impression that that was one of your favorite systems anywhere.

Could you summarize the shared attributes the seven systems have that separates them for you from the rest of the systems you have heard?
Dynamic cone in boxes to electrostatics then to ribbon panels… only just a small step to horns . Not an unknown trajectory (non-hierarchical of course).

Close. I went ribbons to electrostats before the horn move…

Wow big name reviewers moving first to horns. Must be good. What next groundbreaking thing to do, change SS to tubes? Need to buy subscription

Where are the videos of pictures, we have a thread on pictures of an exhibition videos.

Heilbrunn (TAS) seems to change equipment frequently. He had the Wilson Alexandria X2s (Classe 600W SS) and (I believe) before the Avantgardes, he had the XVXs with the DartZ and Thor subwoofers. You may need a subscription to keep track.

I am well aware.

Tads are very good speakers, the best to my taste, But, I have amps, very low power ones, like 45 71a 12a 210 etc
they canot handle well the Tad, they may sound, some even Ok, but they do not shine like they do
with higher eficiency speakers ,
So they are bad speakers then

Jacob has Wilson WAMMs (the earlier flagship model above the XVX) and Master Subsonics subwoofers.

Since Marty's room makes this top-tier list Jacob's room with his prior cone towers Wilson system would have a fortiori, also made this list.

As I think about the rooms + systems in my top-tier list I realize that it is really the optimal rooms which qualify the systems for the top tier list more than the particular components in the system.

Perhaps I should demote Jeroen's Cessaro room to the next tier down only because his room is an existing repurposed space which is closer in size to the rooms in the next tier down, including my room, and Cyrus' room in Spokane.

If I stuffed all of the components in the top-tier rooms into one of the rooms in the second tier those rooms + systems would qualify only for the second tier, simply because of the difference in listening rooms. The dispositive nature in this matrix of the room more than the components in the system is why I put "room" before "system" in the nomenclature of this regime.

Putting it differently if the systems in the second tier were relocated to the rooms in the first tier those rooms + systems generally would be in the first tier (although low frequency supplemental subwoofers probably would need to be added as well).

He had the Wilson Master Chronosonic with The big Thor subwoofers before moving to the horns.

Are any of these large rooms in this “Ron’s top-tier” list untreated, or do they all have some manner of audiophile acoustic treatments?

I ask because I don’t think of the rooms as being primary, or the gear itself, but how specific gear is set up in a specific room. The set up is as important as the gear and the room in my experience. The three are interdependent and only in combination can provide superior results.

A good set up guy or hobbyist with appropriate knowledge and experience can dramatically improve the sound of a given system in a particular room.

How large does a room have to be, to be top-tier ? Especially how wide ? I consider my 6,5 M wide room to small for my taste.

I gave my thoughts on that earlier in the thread a few months ago but to find that you might have to also read posts by other people again.

I guess i have a large room. I would like it to be 8-10 m wide, my speaker system takes up a lot of real estate. :)
