Ron's Speaker, Turntable, Power and Room Treatment Upgrades

5 years...my hat is off to you. Patience is a virtue...

Thank you, Fred. But, honestly, it was not about patience. I simply had much bigger things to worry about during that period.

I think you are now competitive with the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose.

Hi Ron,
So happy for you that things are starting to move forward again. I can't wait to see pictures of the progression.

When I renovated and added on to our home I was without my system for about 2 1/2 years. that was painful.

Keep us updated on the progress with pics please.

After five years of delay work on a repair in the room adjacent (combination home theater and audio equipment room below, and LP and tape storage, record cleaning desk, home office and miscellaneous storage in loft above) to my listening room has finally begun.

My new contractor for the final set of renovations to the house, Tony Cosko, of CalCoast Construction, is the same contractor who installed the electrical infrastructure in the listening room several years ago. He is making progress in the adjacent room on a daily basis.

When that work is done we can have the adjacent room painted, and then the adjacent room and the rear two-thirds of the listening room can be carpeted. Then I can begin to move audio components into the listening room.

I alerted Jason Lord of The Source AV in Torrance, California, who incredibly graciously has been storing my four giant Pendragon crates for five years. I'm a bit nervous about the speakers. I hope we do not find rust or spiderwebs around the towers when we finally open the crates. I hope the ribbon drivers themselves were carefully selected and tested from the last batch received by Gryphon from Bohlender-Graebener ("BG") before BG went out of business. I have always been a little bit nervous about the BG ribbon drivers. Flemming assured me that Gryphon has a lifetime supply of good BG drivers for Pendragons in the field.

Jim White is going to re-commence work on my Io. Brian Berdan is going to box up my Siegfried IIs and TL-7.5 Series III. David has incredibly graciously been storing my AS-2000 (first one to order, I believe, and last one to receive!) racks for five years as well.

I can finally see some dim light at the end of the tunnel. I am beginning to think I will have a big stereo playing music closer to the beginning of this decade than to the end of this decade.

I will not for the foreseeable future have the funds for a second tonearm/cartridge combination. David will be installing my ZYX UNIverse Premium on an SME 3012R.

The beginning of my long-delayed adventure with the new components of this system is now not that far away.
Very exciting! Look forward to seeing it come to life soon for you both!

When the time comes for me to buy a DAC should I connect the streamer to the Internet via an ethernet cable that I plugged into an ethernet jack on the walk near the source components, or do I connect the streamer to the Internet via Wi-Fi?

Thank you!

Hi Ron,

I'm happy for you that things are progressing.

Your question is not so easy to answer. Many are satisfied with WLAN. Dan Bellity preferred WLAN for his La Rosita streamer because galvanic isolation was important to him. I prefer a stable connection over fiber, which also galvanically isolates. I consider a good switch to be very important.

That's how I implemented it:

My connection is different than any, I have ever heard anyone describe.

I have a coaxial cable the comes directly from the fiber connection box on the outside of our home. In my room it is connected to an ActionTec converter. Coaxial in one side and Ethernet out the other side. It requires its own power supply.
That Ethernet cable connects to my switch that feeds my NAS and Server.

Unless the system some how, does things I don't understand, it seems I don't go through the router that all other direct connections in the house do.

I realize the iPad to control my music may go through the wireless part of the router but there is no connection for my internet in my listening room.

If I am way off base here I would welcome an explanation of how the direct signal to my room is not a good thing.
I never really thought about it when I was building my room during our home renovation and only ran 15' of coaxial I needed from the main box outside.

Just another possibility for you to investigate Ron.

This is the amateur radio-type approach I would naturally gravitate toward!

Thank you very much for this post. Unfortunately I could not get past the connections diagram!

I like wires, so the ethernet wire connection from the wall makes sense to me. We seem to have pretty good internet download speed from Spectrum.

Is there any point in tapping into the incoming Internet signal as far upstream as possible? In other words should I try to get an ethernet cable dedicated to audio into the utility connection box where the Spectrum cable comes in from the street?

Or does that not matter, and I can just plug an ethernet cable into the router (wherever it is) and run the ethernet cable to the streamer in the listening room?

Or does that not matter, and I can just run the ethernet cable from the nearest, random, wall-mounted ethernet jack?

I’m afraid to ask . . . but . . . is there a particular brand and model of ethernet cable I should buy to run in-wall?
