Taiko Audio SGM Extreme : the Crème de la Crème

Bob I’m too busy to read the whole thread but here is some good basic practices to follow
1- keep fios router and any WiFi transmitter min 10 feet or more away from anything audio. This means dacs servers preamps and amps.
Next use a lps fed router fed off of your fios one. This gives you an audio only network
Next buy an emo systems network iso. Use it from fios to new audio router.
Next get a giga byte or audio network switch. Never use a router for more then one port it’s too busy and will effect the sound.
Use cat6 shielded Cables copper solid if you can find it. be aware there is mostly fake network cables sold on flea bay and don’t use cables made for audio. While some maybe great most are just not correct in specs
place both fios and new Audio router next to each other
One cable goes to new network SW this is only audio.
Feed all stuff from one source. This means fios too.
Do this and be amazed again.
You can call me anytime and I can stop there too if you wish. Been a long time since I see you.
I’m on essential services list so my company is working 24/7 anyway.
Also use shielded network Cables. only use the shield on one side of connections.
Use a thin pc of wire pushed into the socket to access shield. Ground to one side only so no ground loops.

Hi Al,

I just sent this pm to Romaz as he helped me through getting a separate router dedicated to the Extreme. Between you, in the post above talking about the dedicated audio router, and then Roy's (Romaz) experience with the Ubiquiti Edge X- FXP router.....well, this is what I sent to Roy after inserting the Edge router into the system.

Hi Roy,

WOW, WOW, WOW!!!! I can't believe the difference adding the Edge router to my Verizon router. I have an LPS on the Verizon router and just ordered another for the Edge. Then I still have the JCAT coming in a few days as well. BUT.....

I really thought I had removed a lot of noise from my system. Now I feel that I had removed maybe 25% of the noise prior to adding the dedicated to the Extreme Edge router. The Edge router seems to have taken the other 75% of the noise away.

I'm not sure I have ever heard such an improvement from ANYTHING. I've spent $50K on items that did not make as much of a difference as adding the $100 Edge. Quite amazing. Maybe the best value in all of audio.

If the JCAT switch gives me 25% of what the Edge router did, even though it cost $5K I would be thrilled.

Thx for giving me that hint about the Edge being a tick up as that is what made me buy the second Edge and figure it out.

All the best,

Bob

Can you please share a link for the specific router model. Not sure if it is one with SFP.

Also, which LPS are you using with the router?

Thank you

Greetings,

Here is the Ubiquiti X- SFP router. I must warn you, I bought one about a week ago and got so frustrated with trying to set it up with my Verizon Router that I stuck it in the box and returned it.

Then I was mad at myself for giving up and ordered another one. It only took an hour to install, but I could not figure out how to eliminate the conflicting IP addresses between the Verizon router and the Edge router. It was just me. Anyone familiar with networking would have done it in 15 minutes.

I am using the SGC LPS. I know there are more elaborate LPS's available but for $160 the SGC does a great job. I could tell the difference when I added it to my Verizon router.

You need the 12V version for the Edge router.

If anyone goes this route and has questions about setting up the Ubiquiti Edge let me know, I now can either answer any questions or at least point you in the right direction, which is exactly what Al and Roy did for me.

Is there a reason you kept the Verizon router in the chain? Are you using coaxial for it instead of ethernet or maybe you have TV service too?

I am asking because I have Fios and just pulled out the Verizon router and put the Edge router in its place.

I can’t find the 12V here in Brazil. Just the 24V model.
Any 24V LPS available?

The first reason was that I have at least 5 or 6 hardwire connections (other servers, fax,) and then tablets/Ipads/computers, phones via wifi, to the router(s) in my space. To have the Edge dedicated to the Extreme was my intention.

My next thought is to replace the Verizon router with another Edge router. What did you have to do to replace the Verizon router? Did you have to have Verizon release the ??? so that you can use the Edge.

Do you use Fios for your TV? Not sure but I thought that the Verizon router was needed to have all the functions of the channel guide available?

I use Fios for TV, internet and phone.

Very interested in your experience with replacing the Verizon router, please elaborate.

Are you talking about the SGC LPS? On the SGC site there is a drop down menu for all the voltages.

Before I got the Edge I had a Verizon router which was fed by a single Ethernet cable from my ONT in the garage. When I got the Edge I just swapped out the Verizon router and put the Edge in its place. I probably should have called Verizon to release my IP address but I didn’t bother. Once I put the Edge router in its place it immediately received the IP address from Verizon and I was set to go. It was that simple. I did log into the Edge router and sent some things up.

On a side note, my wireless connectivity in my house is handled separately with an array of Ubiquiti access points. I didn’t even have wireless turned on in my Verizon router. If you do use it for that then you would have to add an access point or 2.

Questions?

Yes. It stops on the 15V

Looks like majority of Extreme owners are using a switch between the Edge router and Extreme. I am wondering if for someone like me, who will have nothing else plugged into the "dedicated for music" Edge router except the Extreme, is a switch really necessary?

I'm trying to keep the chain and amount of boxes to a bare minimum because each "box"/power supply you add will impart its own sound signature to some degree.

Romaz I think might have some good thoughts on it. Emile as well and others that are using the switch. Anxiously awaiting my JCAT, then I will have some thoughts as well.

My thoughts even after getting the JCAT switch probably won't matter much to you as I have so many connections vs your NICE streamlined setup. I don't think you would know unless you stuck a switch in and tried it.

Yes, we have different set ups. I have so many connections I even have an AirPort Extreme that is connected to the Verizon router to handle some of the hardwire connections that I need.

My experience and it REALLY was transformational sonically may have been that I got the Extreme connection out of the Verizon router that was SO BUSY vs. the Edge router itself. I think it was a combination of getting the Extreme connection isolated into the only connection from the router as well as I think the Ubiquiti is a VERY GOOD sounding router. I did not compare other routers but Romaz for one did.

Since you are still using the Verizon router it sounds like you are using the Edge as a switch and not a router. Is that correct? The Verizon router is still assigning the IP addresses I would assume since you still have other devices connected directly to it.

Network dummy here:) So, not quite sure how you would classify the Edge. I had to go into the settings on the Edge router and change the IP address so it did not conflict with the Verizon router. The Edge is connected to one of the LAN, not WAN outputs from the Verizon router.

I am going to connect the JCAT switch between the Edge router and the Extreme. So- ????? BUT I do know that the sonics with all of this HAVE GONE THROUGH THE ROOF and for almost no $$$.

Oh yes, Bob. And the description says 5-15V. 15V is the limit.
i am waiting for some distributer answers here. Let’s see what I get.

It sounds as though you are using the Edge as a switch, not a router, which is fine. However, when you get the jcat switch you should definitely try it with and without the Edge since you effectively will have 2 switches between the Verizon router and the Extreme if you use both.

Yes, the description says that but there is a drop down menu on the DC voltage output with all of the different voltages.
