Taiko Audio SGM Extreme : the Crème de la Crème

Thx Emile, Already tried re enter credentials, but still same. Is there any way to reset Qobuz account in TAS?

No, what may help is entering them in the remote app, not through a web browser, and do not press enter after typing the password but press the “save settings” button.

No it’s relatively minor.

Should I translate that to mean that I shouldn’t really hear a noticeable, if any, difference is sound quality from one setting to another? If that is the case i may just go with maximum. Of course, this will certainly change when a LMS-less version of TAS is released.

Well everything has some sort of influence, the additional memory it uses is trivial relative to what’s available, why don’t you just try and see if you can hear a difference, easy to revert if you feel it has a negative impact. I do not spend much time around trying LMS settings myself as it’s just a stop-gap.

Thanks for the tip about music and artist information. I see you have also checked "Don't Stop The Music". Have you gotten this to work? In my case when I get to the end of the play queue it just starts over again at the top of the queue and doesn't add new music.

Thanks!

Steve Z
Hi Steve. It doesn't work for me either.

Hi Steve. It doesn't work for me either.

Darn! I was hoping you had discovered the secret handshake that would enable "Don't Let The Music Stop". I even made sure that the Repeat function was off, thinking it might take precedence over letting LMS go out and search for more music to add to the queue. Perhaps its some kind of Tidal and Qobuz API thing.

Pity, because this is one of my two top wish-list items (besides true gapless playback) -- a function in TAS similar to Roon Radio. I really miss the ability to just let the player continue playing at the end of a queue and discover more music.

No doubt our intrepid development team is hard at work on these UX items.

Until then, I'll just be patient and work on discovering all the music in my own library I haven't listened to in far too long!

Fiber Card Change?

My Extreme came with a 1G StarTech fiber card.

Has anyone tried a different card and is this still the fiber card of choice with the Taiko guys?

Still the fiber card of choice. If it gets replaced it will be by a design of our own.

That will be fantastic if you could adapt already predesigned switch to operate as a PCIe card.
This way both the Startech optical card and DIY swiches could be potentially replaced .
The key and real challenge will be probably to find time in your busy agenda.
I hope this will happen.
Will wait patiently....

tidal is sounding great but the imported playlist is still stubbornly at 537 items...
i logged out of tidal and back in.

i've set the playlist max length to 0. reboots, etc. any ideas?

An approximately 500 Playlist maximum is a functional restriction of the way Tidal handles requests from third party applications.

I am told that the Naim Tidal client has a similar restriction as the LMS Tidal client. I searched but could not find the playlist track limit for Roon's Tidal Client

The actual maximum limit of a Tidal Playlist is 9,999 but not possible to play using TAS

How to bypass Amanero in the Chord DAVE

As an avid longtime owner of the Chord DAVE DAC, I have enviously watched Lampizator Pacific owners surgically bypass the horribly high-latency Amanero USB chipset that came installed on their DAC courtesy of the JL Sounds XMOS board. It turns out that bypassing the Amanero bottleneck leads to what Emile describes as improved "boogie."

While I had generally been pleased with the performance of my DAVE with the Extreme, I was, of course, very curious to know just how badly Amanero was holding back the Extreme with this DAC and disappointed that this large-buffer USB chipset was the reason the Taiko ASIO USB driver could not be used with the DAVE. To put it simply, it drove me nuts.

As my 2 Chord DAVEs were already highly modified and their warranties already voided, I was not against exploring such a bypass even if it meant sacrificing one of my DAVEs and a small group of us DAVE owners did explore this. Before there was an opportunity to "surgerize" one of our DAVEs, however, Emile, who recently added a DAVE to his growing collection of DACs suggested using a USB-to-SPDIF bridge since entering DAVE via SPDIF would be one way of bypassing its Amanero USB chipset. Because the magic of DAVE lies in feeding this DAC upsampled 705/768kHz PCM material, such a bridge would need to have dual SPDIF (BNC) outputs capable of an aggregate 768kHz bandwidth which is not something you see everyday. Emile figured he would have to design one himself.

Well, it turns out such a USB to dual-BNC bridge expressly designed for Chord DACs already exists and it is currently being manufactured and sold by AudioWise (based in Canada).

If there is a caveat, this bridge does not utilize XMOS but rather a chipset from a Taiwanese company called C-Media and so this was an initial concern. Would this C-Media chipset be no better than Amanero? I communicated with Dan Mance, who owns AudioWise and he was kind enough to send me a few units for evaluation. To cut to the chase, this USB-to-dual BNC bridge is fantastic and far superior to the Amanero in DAVE. In comparison, DAVE's Amanero sounds slow and bloated and sleepy. As always, YMMV but I believe all of Dan's products come with a money back satisfaction guarantee. Not surprisingly, the quality of the USB cable and the BNCs cables matter but even with inexpensive cables, this bridge is far superior to DAVE's USB input. In my opinion, if you own an Extreme and a Chord DAVE DAC, this bridge is a "must have."

Full disclosure, I have zero financial affiliation with AudioWise.

Quick question: does an ethernet or AES/EBU connection from the Taiko SGM Extreme not sound as good as USB?

Or put another way, if you're anti-USB, is acquiring this server a waste?

Why would anyone be anti anything?
If it sounds best then that's what you use....

You will get a lot of different opinions on your question. My opinion is that the Extreme will still sound great using AES/EBU or the SPDIF outputs. A lot of times it will depend on the dac and what input the dac prefers.

My question would be if you heard the usb to the dac connection and it sounded better, especially with the new usb card, TAS and the TAS usb driver, would you still be anti usb?

No, I suppose I wouldn't, but I wouldn't want to invest in an expensive USB cable when I've already done so for AES/EBU.

The performance of USB has been lifted to a new level of transparency and 3D soundstaging by the 5.0 USB Driver and USB card

The RME card and AES output has not benefited from these advances

PM me, and I will be happy to review the options for DACs of interest

I would loan you a good usb cable to try even if you buy the Extreme direct or from someone else. Then if you prefer the usb sell the AES cable.

Thanks, guys. I've been working on my digital chain (various upgrades) and keep wondering what a better server would do.
