Taiko Audio SGM Extreme : the Crème de la Crème

I don’t care what they call it; I just want to hear it!

Patience little grasshopper. May is around the corner and Munich just as close so we have to be no more than a few weeks away. My hope is that we users have it before it is released at Munich which if so would suggest things are even closer for we lucky ones.

I have all the patience in the world. Once the Christmas release date came and went (for good reason) I have been content with waiting it out.

Are they showcasing it at Munich or is it just a poster tease?

Pretty sure I heard it in Oldenzaal a couple weeks ago and it was stunning. No idea how it compares to its predecessor, but what I heard was truly exceptional.

We can't confirm anything just yet but there is certainly every intention of showing more than just a poster tease. :)

I could give a shit less what it is called. XDMS works for me. I'm only interested in SQ and performance. BTW best cleaner for terminals, etc. is Isopropyl Alcohol, 99.9%. Laboratory Grade...John

The Extreme did it's job for 3 days at Axpona. It fed an Esoteric DAC and the digital never glitched once in 3 days. Also mentioned in the TAS report as one of the BEST rooms at the show.

Best

As in the past, the $48k, two-way (electrostatic-like membrane tweeter, Egyptian papyrus cone woofer), carbon-fiber-bodied, Steam Punk-looking Bayz Courante were doing their marvelous omni-thing, driven by an Esoteric DAC and a Pillium amp and preamp. In a much smaller room, the sound was quite wonderful—like all radials, a little less focused at stage center than direct radiators, but so open and natural than all else was forgiven.

Taiko Team,
Will XDMS hold a SQ advantage with a JL Sound card over an Amanero card in a Lampizator as TAS does?
Also, will XDMS as server be able to output to other network endpoints as Roon server does? If so, what software and network capabilities will those endpoints require? Or is it recommended to hold onto Roon for those devices. I’m sure running XDMS and Roon simultaneously would cloud SQ, if even possible. Or offer operating recommendations.

Please advise. Thanks.

I can’t speak for Taiko but my Pacific came with Amanero and in order to derive full benefit of TAS I had to switch to JL Sounds I would have to think that the same would be required for XDMS. Not sure how we would run both Roon and XDMS simultaneously when the TAS app switches from ROON to TAS. I would imagine the same for XDMS Plus Roon will be history with me for sure. I haven’t used it in years

Glad I moved from Roon to TAS.

i had not changed Roon even after reading posts that extolled the superiority of TAS. Figured the improvement was incremental and not worth the risk of changing to TAS when XDMS was just around the corner.

But a few weeks ago, I noticed my system was not sounding right after accepting Roon’s updates. A majority of the emotional engagement was gone and it was sounding very hi-fi. Apparently others were experiencing the same thing after the updates.

It took me a while to change to TAS and get it up and running but DAMN!! What a dramatic change!!

I’m not going to go into audiophile terms as they cannot do justice to what I heard. And many of you are there already.

But what I can say is that music pieces I had listened to hundreds of times were transformed beyond what I had ever heard before in my room and my system: My heart filled with emotion effortlessly and my soul just soared. Jaw dropped.

If XDMS improves on this then Damn…I can’t wait!

This is Greek to me. It doesn’t seem like I’d need anything other than Taiko sw (TAS or XDMS) to use an Extreme as a server feeding my DAC via USB? Where does Amanero and JLSounds and Roon come in?

That's all you'd need. The discussion in Greek is a particular issue Lampizator DAC users have run into.

When I had my Pacific it came with Amanero board. When there was an update to the TAS software there were limitation issues wrt DSD and filters they used. Emile told me that Amanero had maxed out and users get full TAS with JL Sounds or equivalent YSB board. I changed to the JL Sounds USB board and never had a problem. My Horizon DAC uses JL Sounds. I think the issue is not the JL Sounds but rather Amanero

Steve,
Thanks. My Holo Audio May DAC does not use (or at least call out) a branded USB, et al board brands/types. I wasn’t aware that Lapizator does. Presumably as long as the Taiko Extreme sends “standard” USB data with either TAS or XDMS my DAC will work fine up to it’s limit of 512DSD.

This rabbit hole is deep and wide!

It seems that the problem is Amanero and it’s limitations. AFAIK Emile has factored in virtually every DAC that is being used with the Extreme and has default settings for each so I doubt this is an issue for anyone any more

Thanks for explaining Steve.
The Amanero doesn’t allow for adjusting the buffer size if I remember correctly. JL Sound does. TAS exploited this feature for increased SQ. Will XDMS do the same? Seems likely.

This will be relevant to me as my Extreme will arrive in a couple weeks while I still have a Pacific with Amanero. In two months or so my Lampizator Horizon will arrive with the JL Sound card. So I’m likely to take a path covering all these bases. Roon, TAS, then XDMS; then onto the JL Sound with Horizon.

In the meantime I’m still curious if XDMS will be able to be used as the server library, or core, for the endpoint which is the source for my home zone system. Roon allows for one library on the server to front all devices. For those not familiar with this common arrangement of feeding an endpoint (player with renderer and dac) it works through the home LAN; not usb, spdif, etc.

I don’t think XDMS can be used as a Roon core but the Taiko team will have to answer.

Why not just use Roon on the Extreme when you want to feed endpoints? That will likely be your best solution.
