The most abused song at audio shows... ever: "Keith don't go" Nils Loftgrin live

Rob,
what's the best recording of Holst's The Planets? I'm trying to find a good one for the New York show. I love Saturn, and I don't recall anyone ever playing that in an audio show.

If you want a suggestion: The Mehta/Los Angeles Philharmonic rendition, Decca SXL 6529 is a well regarded "audiophile approved" LP and has one of the best sounding "Saturn" movements I have ever heard.

This is the one I was going to mention, very nice.

An oddball one would be Bernard Hermann Phase 4 LP with the London Philharmonic. For some reason, this one evokes an almost painful aura of nostalgia in me when I listen to it, and has my most liked "Venus" version. I also like the Saturn, though the record is not the quietist, the OC disorders might not like the mild hiss.

The Mehta mentioned is great. I love the Previn w/ the London Sym EMI ASD 3002 (HP list) and Solti w/ london Phil, Decca SET 628. the Previn is being reissued and available very soon on 180g vinyl, i have the paper thin EMI 'small dog' 1st press and the sonics are great. The Solti is the same performance MFSL cut for the UHQR. I no longer have the mobile but my maroon decca pressing is superb, i recall keeping the decca pressing and loosing the UHQR because it wasnt as good. they're probably all available as redbook, i have no specific recos for cds.

Thanks, Rob. The Previn on 180g is already available. I bought that one as well as the 1986 remaster and the 1971 first press. Also, got the Decca maroon label of the Solti. I'm not a big fan of the UHQR classical albums because I find that they equalized the music out of them for more impressive sonics.

Did you get the Hi-Q Records vinyl of the Previn "Planets"?

They've done brilliant work with these - straight from the masters, and excellently mastered on silent vinyl. And cheap from the company itself.

Yes I did. Looking forward to it as I am interested in some of the other titles they have as well.

Thanks, Mike. I've got all of them coming over the next 10 days or so, and will have Planets coming out of my ears soon :)

Are you a member of PNWAS?

I just saw this thread and I have to agree. I try to be polite when I got to rooms, but as soon as I hear this start playing I ask to change it. First, it's an awful recording (it seems impressive at first, but that wears thing), and second, it's not that great of a song to listen to.

I'm a huge Nils fan but my preference would be the live version from the boot "Back It Up".

You haven't lived till you've heard Greek bagpipe music. Many years ago at a local audio society meeting a member handed me a CD of it to put on. It lasted about 30 seconds at most. Some of us laugh about it to this day.

For what it's worth, my absolute favorite recording of the Planets is the Decca CD with Duthoit and Montreal....yes, it suffers a wee bit of the '90's digital-ness, but damn, still a recording of a piece I yet to find a better version of....the old Solti and Mehta are fine recordings as well, though to me they still do not come up the sheer power of the Montreal band.....

Cheers,

When Keith don't go first began to be played in audiophile cicles here in Sweden 7 o 8 years ago there was this game: Can you hear the mobile ringing from the audience? Somewhere around 2 min there is a faint mobile signal between 2 notes. If you could hear it you supposed to have good hearing. Some people say that they spot it right on but I could not. When my "golden ear" friend Tobbe played it over and over agian saying " right there" I finally heard it (I think). Very stupid game. But I really like the song. The DVD video with Nils playing that song is stunning!

It depends where you are. 'Keith Don't Go' is popular in US shows, but 'No Sanctuary Here' by Chris Jones is played more often than Nils Lofgren in a lot of European shows.

From a demonstration perspective, it's a problem. You know there are a few dozen tracks that are audiophile 'dingers' - you play the track in it's like Pavlov ringing his little doggy lunch bell. You also know that - despite the rolling dislike for such tracks - anything else gives variable results. I was really impressed with one dealer playing just classical music at the UK's National Audio Show last year, but I know there were times when they were playing the music to themselves.

It's not even as if you can sandwich the more interesting music between audiophile-approved tracks. Even if the track in question is lost audiophile gold, if you stray off message too much, you lose about 40% of the audience fast. And it really doesn't take much - play the 'wrong' track on We Get Requests for example and you'll lose three people in the time it takes to rectify the mistake.

so, by your reckoning playing black Sabbath at a show would be a mistake? :D

the bass and drums cut from Nil's first album is the 'killer' track...I get a severe allergy when I hear "brother in arms" at shows and anything by Diana krall is closing in fast.

I am trying to select music that no one else will be playing. I know that is risky, but at least you won't be able to blame Diana Krall on me! Her live shows are great, by the way.
