You wonder how the helicopter happened to be at the right place to record all of that. Wonder if it was the local station. Either way, it kept making me think of our place on the water. We are about 50 feet up from water level. I wonder if we will be safe or washed away as the poor people were in that video .
NHK, public TV organization in Japan, has 14 helicopters equipped with HD cameras and positioned all over Japan for capturing such images at the first alert signal from their Tokyo HQ.
It is clear how well the Japanese are prepared for earth quakes and other disasters but the last one had just overwhelmed even them…
Awesome. And fearsome. I have a phobia for oceans and seas but my wife and kids love the beach. My phobia stems from the power of the ocean waves and fear of being caught inside it, and it was heightened after I watched the movie Point Break in 1991 with Patrick Swayze as a champion surfer. I thought the sight of the Indonesia quake and tsunami a couple of years ago was horrible and this one in Japan tops that many many times. I hope we do not get to see these things again happening. It's too devastating.
We're not out of the woods with the nuclear plants. The latest news is that a radio-active leak is spreading into the ocean!
Could be months, years, and then the possibility of another catastrophe!
Anybody think this might be related to the events that are going to unfold on Dec 21, 2012? And Amir, I would be a little nervous about being only 50' above sea level.

We'll soon find out! ...And if there is no more life on Earth, and that What's Best Forum won't be no more, then Bye everyone.
But we still have some time left for few more posts...
I am too. I did some research and seemed like the predictions for this area are about 17 feet of elevation due to Tsunami. Question becomes what happens if it goes up that high, and erodes the hill our house is on.
My back up plan is running up hill behind the house which seems to climb up to 200 feet. TV stations are good here regarding emergency signals but with watching DVR and online content, one may be in the dark and not hear the alarms. May have to get a emergency radio just for that.
Resurrecting this thread with an email I received from a Japanese friend with scanned images of an article. Thought everyone would enjoy reading it as much as I did:
A grateful country and people, wouldn't you say? Did we ever get an article like this in other humanitarian efforts we have been involved with overseas?
That's the difference with a civilized and relatively rational country, like Japan. Japan is an ally and a good friend and as such is a value worth protecting, unlike 3rd world warloards and their starving hoards of maggots/useless eaters. Japan, by contrast, produces goods, services and a value that improves the quality of human life. That is a value worth upholding.
