Visit to Marc C.'s (SpiritOfMusic's) House in England

Brad, there's a coastal town near us where the richest families from Central London have their second homes. And the kids run riot in the pub garden, playing tag, nearly bowling over waiting staff and pints of beer. And the parents really think this amount of freedom and zero rules/discipline will be positive for their kids' development.
Unless it is multi generational wealth, I can promise you the parents didn’t get the same carefree childhood/early adulthood. Rich parents often make this mistake...they think “I don’t want my kids to have to struggle like I did and I can give them what they want.” They don’t realize it was the struggle for success that shaped their views, discipline and drive.

I do
I don't know Ron. The chances of me hearing the Symphonias again is pretty slim/non existent. But if they didn't shine for me in an all-Aries Cerat system, then I don't know what to think. And the owner had optimised the system to his liking over time, this was no thrown together hotel room show setup.
Symphonias.

My experience of Munich exposures is that they can sound from truly dreadful to really quite impressive.

This setup was good. But the price of the driving hardware was not.

No hardness that I noticed on quite a few visits.

Interesting conversation, but I apologize to Marc for going off topic.

Marc, you show discipline and drive with your move out of central London to the chapel and then with your persistence, er resilience, and leaning in toward Zu. You have been teased and given much grief and I suspect felt some pain along the way. This struggle for success is surely shaping your views and you are better for it. :)

Haha Peter...you've noticed Lol.
The move out of here wasn't so much brave as trying a new adventure w the "missus", and in almost every respect it's been a success. From an audiophile POV it has given me room acoustics I was sorely lacking back in London.
Ironically horns like Bill's would probably have worked better in my London apartment, but that situation will never come to pass.
There had been times I'd been seriously tempted by Zu alternatives. After hearing the Cessaro Liszts horns in 2014 (but I really couldn't stretch to £70k), Graz Apogee Duettas (but I wasn't prepared to go megaWatts SS), a dalliance w AG Duos horns (but reservations on their ABS horns signature remained a major doubt).
And then the long term experiment of opening up my Zu sound so I maintained what appealed to me on day one while addressing those restrictions that were inhibiting on pure acoustic music like classical and jazz.
And for me pushing the envelope on setup, optimisation, tweaking etc has given me more personal satisfaction than the more simple option of just switching them out.
And as I've absorbed the sonic effects of dozens of classical gigs since we moved here, I have way more confidence my choices are good ones for the right reasons.
Now I'll freely admit the experience of Bill's horns is of a different order. But even here despite Bill's sound being so exemplary across the board, and my Zus are not the same, things now here are not so alien and inferior as they would have been pre-2015 and our move.
And so my spectrum personality takes great delight in comparing the changes I've wrought and sheer enjoyment I get from the Zus to 8 years of brickbats lobbed my way on this forum re championing Zu.

Interestingly, dyed in the wool audiophiles who visit have mixed impressions on my Zus.
But other interesting visitors...a record producer, professional DJ, professional opera singer...all love what they hear, and feel my Zu sound really communicates.
And your "man on the street" Lol...just regular music lovers, don't want to leave the loft.
I'm not attempting to boast here, just state my case that I've eeked out a pretty admirable all round impressive sound from more limited beginnings and a broad number of non audiophiles really like what they hear.
Horns are the only natural place to go/final evolution of my sound, but imho there are more pitfalls than easy positives, starting w how mixed so many horns sound across the board.
As *I* judge things.

(...) I have heard Avantgarde speakers mostly sound horrible but a couple times sound amazing. I am not ready to write off either speaker based on these experiences because I know this kind of speaker is like an audio microscope and anything wrong will be exposed. (...)

IMHO these couple of times are the relevant data points. If you listened to them sounding amazing more that once probably it means that people can make them sound so.

Can you share some detail of the conditions of these great experiences?

Since I haven’t been in the esteemed group to hear your system, I would only be able to say what I have heard from Zu so far was kind of disappointing because it is a speaker I would love to love. As you know, I like NAT products and have owned a couple in the past (Symbiosis SE and Plasma pre) so if anything will elevate the Zu speakers they will. The fact that pros in the music biz dig your system indicates that it has a fundamental rightness and appeal but that it is mixed with experienced audiophiles indicates it may have a strong “flavor” it imparts on the recordings. Or some frequency bands that stand out that a critical listener might jump on as “not right”.

One system was Duo (Omega?) with AudioPax amps, Lampizator DAC (GG?), Sound Galleries server in a box room in Munich.

Another was Duo (not sure which version) with Thomas Mayer amps and not sure the rest.

Another was Trios with bass horns driven by Jadis amps .

There are two more instances but they are too far into the past to recollect what amps/source were being used.

Couldn’t resist posting this again just for fun. Zu’s definitely don’t sound like this.

Well, we have one thing in common Barry. Almost as many people here hate Duos as hate Zus.
We're both doing something right.

Oh, audiophiles certainly are critical listeners. They should learn to relax a bit more. Nurse! Pass me the tranquilizers!
