Had a number of misses exploring Classical Guitar and pairings recently. This is from ACM Production [links to online store in Turkey] who appear to be the vehicle Fazil Say utilizes for his domestic production and management duties.

This is one of my favorite versions of the GV. Great playing and sound, as is always the case with this now defunct label. His two CDs of late Beethoven Sonatas are excellent, too.

Understandably has slow and contemplative beginnings in his solo work before addressing virtuosic performance.

Generally I find informative blurbs only get in the way of music. Not so with violinist Takako Nishizaki who instantly made an impression on me with her playing.

From being the first student of the Suzuki teaching method as it was developed by her father and the namesake Shinichi Suzuki. Through marriage to founder of HNH International who started the Naxos label with the proceeds of her record sales in China. Placing a rather sizable punctuation mark on her rejection by the Western music establishment.

A desert island set for sure!
A wonderful and enjoyable set, for sure, but I hope there are other options on my desert island. An (expected) eternity with no relief from Mahler's POV is likely to lead even more rapidly to madness than would the actual dire situation.
Written as a Mahler devotee.

The boulder strewn mountain valleys of Florida in actuality might've been Delius in his cups lying under an orange tree watching cloud shapes.

:) Package it with some good rock and roll CDs and you'll be all set

As many notable Mahler cycles that are out there, and one could counter there very well might be far too many, I keep coming back to Gary Bertini's recordings with the Cologne Radio Symphony orchestra. It is a combination of the musicianship and technical aspects of the recording. Oddly, this set seems to have risen in price and/or gone out of print.

And here are two really recent albums striking my fancy:

  • Sean Shibe — Lost & Found
    • Never at a loss to make us (the listeners) take notice, Sean Shibe, manages to lose and then find himself in his own personal musical explorations and reveries
    • . This latest album aptly titled.
  • Paul Wee — Beethoven-Liszt & Mozart & Alkan • Piano Transcriptions
    • The transcription of Beethoven's 3rd Symphony: Eroica is "gobsmackingly" fabulous. Remember the name Paul Wee and search out his recording. His accomplishments belie his surname.
