What Credentials Should An Acoustician Have

Steve,

Are you allowed to expose and debate in detail the treatments that were carried in your room? Almost all people I have asked about their specific custom room treatments could not answer as they were not allowed to share what is considered proprietary information.

To the best of my ability I will but everything I'm using is indeed proprietary

The micro fiber stuff I guess Steve is referring to in the drapes is pretty new but easily researcheable and explainable via gas flow resistivity.

You're probably correct. As I said I will to the best of my ability answer questions re the things used. I've seen (oops heard) what some of these things do and what's amazing is you don't see any of them as they are either in the ceiling, attic, walls or floors and even doors.

As I said the challenge for me was my speakers in this room. As a result I didn't want to burn precious space by using room treatments sitting in the room. More later

Gotta love unobtrusive room treatments!

Ack,

I feel guilty. I do not speak Italian, although I can understand a little if people speak slowly. ;) But since long consider it the more beautiful spoken language in the world.
Take this example. The spoken words sound like music: (First canto of Dante Alighieri well known La divina commedia)

http://www.liberliber.it/mediateca/...media/mp3/alighieri_commedia_v_002_inf_01.mp3

:) "speak my language" is an expression that implies they and I think alike, w/o me necessarily being anywhere near in technical knowledge as them, just same principles, thinking and approach - thus, we "communicate" perfectly.

Hi Steve, was this a new construction or did you take down the existing sheetrock walls before rebuilding? Maybe I am getting ahead of myself and you are going to do a show and tell later?

Hi Nyal. I was planning to write up what I did and used after everything has been completed. This was a new construction where I built the room above my living room. Existing sheet rock was left untouched but I added a 2nd layer of Quiet Rock over walls and ceiling for starters

As I said before, this room has been a real challenge and I am hoping for the best

Nyal,
When you say explainable via gas flow resistivity I immediately think about porous materials. However this type of materials should be used at points at maximum velocity of the air - shouldn't their bass absorption be very low when used close to walls?

Whoah! That's major work. I remember the video you posted of your new home. I thought you would be choosing between your living room or converting one of the garages. I had no idea you built a new room by putting a new floor in. That puts the dedication in dedicated music room. LOL.

Sure, and the same goes for auto mechanic, acupuncturist, master chef, home builder, and pretty much any other profession besides law and medicine. You don't need a degree to be excellent, and having a degree doesn't guarantee excellence either. Hey, someone has to graduate at the bottom of their class! :D

Admission without law school
I
n California, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington, an applicant who has not attended law school may take the bar exam after study under a judge or practicing attorney for an extended period of time.[9][10] This method is known as "reading law" or "reading the law".
New York requires that applicants who are reading the law have at least one year of law school study (Rule 520.4 for the Admission of Attorneys).
Maine allows students with two years of law school to serve an apprenticeship in lieu of completing their third year.

Ethan given your interest in the law you might be interested you can become a lawyer without going to law school.

Stevei was interested to know if the resident of your old home will be leaving your music room intact? possibly for his own H/T

I guessed it was a porous material, but maybe it could be mass loaded vinyl in the drapes!?!

Most 'acoustic treatment' that people use is porous materials mounted on the walls where velocity is low. Is that the best approach? No but it seems to be what most people do!

I prefer someone with a microphone, published objective standards based on physics, research and experience and the patience to teach his dummy customers how to use their own microphone and the necessary skills related to speaker position, seated position and room treatments. The didactic approach is best.

When it's all done, the only ears that matter are mine.

Completely agree and that is essentially what I did ( even though I know some of the things you mentioned)

Yes! Too many experts will gladly take your money and do their thing, but then you have to hire them all over again if you decide to move the couch etc. Teach a man to fish comes to mind.
