New member, 2nd post. I bought Jay's XVX's last year. I went to replace the resistors and the resistor numbers don't match between the left and right speakers. The 7" left has 3x1950 and 1x1942 (4 resistors per driver). What do these numbers mean? Not in the owners manual. The 4" has 3x1944 and 1x1949 and these are the same both left and right. The front tweeters have 1951x4 (left) and 3x1951 and 1x1834 (right). The "rear" tweeter has 1902 both sides. Would XVX owners please look at theirs and post what they are? If it wasn't the weekend I'd call Wilson. Thanks!
BTW, APEX monos (yes they sound great) and Nagra Reference pre being shipped and I should have it next week. Rossini here and D3 coming next week also.

Quite a system! Welcome aboard...I am sure there are people who can help here on resistors...including at least 1 if not 2 XVX owners who are members here. A long-term owner of Gryphon amps myself for 12 consecutive years until Mephisto was replaced by Robert Koda K160 Monos, and CJ GAT 2 was replaced with Robert Koda K15EX.

I imagine your Nagra Ref/Gryphon Apex will be an astoundingly good combination. Set it and forget it...or rather, set it and enjoy it!

Are you saying Wilson does not say in the manual which resistor goes where They used to always tell you which resistor goes where and as a long time Wilson owner the right and left channels always matched so I wonder if someone has been puhtzing with the resistors to tune the speakers to their room. Try calling Wilson Audio. Im sure they would tell you as well

These numbers are probably date manufacture codes and are of no interest. As far as I remember the XLF resistors also had the value also written in them - eg 3.3 ohm was 3R3.

I would just call Wilson service on Monday but pretty sure they are in the owners manual.

Regardless, left channel should match the right channel

Welcome to What's Best Forum, duchman221!

The numbers cited do not sound like resistor values. They may be part numbers? The resistors for your speaker are available on line from Wilson:

There is a picture of the resistors but the values are intentionally blurred. However information is provided as follows:

"These are packaged for a single channel. You will need to order 2 sets if you wish to replace your resistors for a pair of Loudspeakers.
  • The Tweeter option contains 4 resistors assembled together with a final value of 2.1 ohms.
  • The 4" Midrange option contains 4 resistors assembled together with a final value of 1.5 ohms.
  • The 7" Midrange option contains 4 resistors assembled together with a final value of 0.10 ohms.
  • The Rear Tweeter option contains 1 resistor with a final value of 4.8 ohms.
  • The Bundle option contains resistors for the tweeters and midranges listed above."
*****************
In my experience, their resistors are all of equal value (at least on the Alexx V) so keep in mind that the values cited above are the final impedances in ohms, which are obtained by using multiple individual resistors in parallel or series/parallel. As several have stated, just call Wilson directly to learn what you need to replace the resistors correctly.

Try pages 46-49 of the XVX manual.
  • 7" midrange has 4 x 0.1 Ohm resistors in series / parallel
  • 4" midrange has 4 x 1.5 Ohm resistors in series / parallel
  • front tweeter has 4 x 2.1 Ohm resistors in series / parallel
  • rear tweeter has 1 x 4.8 Ohm resistor

Regardless, left channel should match the right channel

Surely the same value resistors. But many times components have other codes, such as date manufacture or batch codes, that are not relevant to performance. It is why I asked to look for the ohmic value.

See the attached picture - the only important number is the ohmic value - in this case 10 000 ohm.

Thank you all. The manual has the resistance but nothing about the 4 digit number. I have no idea why I would have thought that number mattered (I question whether the factory would have used different numbers (batches?) on a brand new speaker of this cost. Just seems off.) At any rate, replaced and all good.
The system is in process. I like to "get it and forget it". For the last 30+ years B&W 801 Matrix 3 on Sound Anchor stands and Levinson #23's one per side bi-wired. Proceed AVP2 and a modified Marantz SACD player. Eichmann cables and power chords. Added 2x3 array of REL Carbon Specials a couple years ago never dreaming at that time I would be doing what I am today. I have a lot of acoustic work to do as the room (28ft x 24ft but open on one end) has hardwood floors, lots of big glass windows (Hunter Douglas does not make an acoustic shade big enough for the two large windows on the west and east sides so any ideas on where to go for these appreciated-about 13 ft high and almost 10ft across), and a rock fireplace. Also, even though I have 6 dedicated lines, I need to tweak a bit courtesy of the white paper in the thread on having a great power supply. Really helpful.
System now XVX, APEX monos, Rossini (probably not permanently) and Nagra Ref prę on the way. Even before the work that needs to be done it sounds pretty darn good. Mark Knopfler on 5:15am. In the dark you think he is sitting on a stool 15 feet in front of you, live. My dealer will be visiting me with I think Bill from Wilson in May for final speaker placement and install of spikes (hardwood floors-once the speakers placed with spikes they will never move while I'm alive, LOL).

Fantastic description and having heard big Gryphons and Wilsons (Antileon & X1 as well as Mephisto and XLF in my case), I can imagine how real, how much foundation there is to your sound and soundstage. Enjoy!

The big question is why did you need to change resistors?

Perhaps they select from different batches to get closer matching.
