TechDas Air Force One

Funny you should mention that. After all these years I figured I knew pretty well what the resolution ceiling of my system was, at least as far as analog goes. Playing a non-audiophile 150gm Ann Burton LP, I was shocked at how articulate the brush strokes were on both skin and brass or on the 6-eye of Mathis' Heavenly how a waltz rythm played by the string section so subtly supported the melody on one track. It's a lot to take in at first, all that unforced detail. Also a bit eerie not seeing a unipivot arm not bobbing and weaving about, well weaving a bit on off very off center presses but no bobbing.

One heck of a good side effect is that I went from 10 o'clock to 9 o'clock on my preamp without missing anything at all. The silence between tracks is also something of a revelation. Groove echo is so low it's inaudible from the listening position and my room has a noise floor that can be considered very low at less than 40dB with the HVAC off and a shade over when on. Vinyl Black? LOL. I think so!

It's just a dark photo Rich, it's the same silver and black as all the others. :)

I'll say this for now. I had no idea how much more the Lyra Atlas could do. Absolutely no idea AT ALL until now.

Congratulations, Jack. Mine is now also up and running.:D The Captain was gracious enough to lend me his backup cartridge in order not to delay the setup, but after your comment I cannot wait for my Atlas to arrive (hopefully, next week).

Looking forward to Saturday, Jack. I can only just begin to imagine....:p

Hi Jack,

Are we on for Super Saturday? What time do the gates open? :D

How does 2:00 sound to you guys? Bring some O.W.N.s Phil. I promise not to try and take them off your hands  :D

Yikes! I haven't texted Sam! I hope he hasn't planned a weekend at Sta. Elena yet!

Woohoo! That looks like an XV-1s. The Captain sure has a nice back up cart!

Looks like you and I both got stumped at the same point with the manual. I'll write up a more detailed revision for that portion and send it to Motofumi for future owners. :)

Yes, it is an XV-1s. There are good reasons the Captain is the Captain.;)

Connecting the air pump correctly was the only small hitch in the installation. Thank you again for your help.

I had heard the Air Force One extensively at the Captain's, but I was completely unprepared for the impact of finally hearing it in my own system.

Copy Jack. 2.pm is fine with me. Will pick some but I think most 'o.w.n.'ed' are also present in your o.w.n. too. :D

Once the group becomes more familiar with what this turntable is doing, could some of you post a detailed listening report and perhaps compare the AF1 to other quality tables that you have owned? I'm sure many on this forum would be interested to read some detailed listening impressions and comparisons. Thanks.

So far I've mounted the exact arm and cart on my TW AC-3 (which I have no intention of selling BTW because it's still a great table) on my AF-1. I wish I had two exact arms and carts so I could A/B. I'm also using two different phonostages right now. I'm using a Valvet Soulphono with 1:20 SUTs, Tele 803s and 801s tubes with the arms of on the TW. I'm using a Lamm LP2 Deluxe with the AF1. More details when I've had much more time with the tables. I have to give the "crush" stage some time to wear off so I can be more objective. What is undeniable is how much quieter than the TW. A lot of what was stripped away however was not bad colorations per so, some were colorations I rather enjoyed so this reduction in noise and coloration may not be for everybody.

uh oh, the first non believer

Jack you need Vlads Signature phono stage

2pm, 40 deg C, it will be nice to seek refuge in your subterranean lair Jack. See you!

LOL not at all. I'm very much a believer. As you say Steve, different may not mean better. Personally I LOVE it, there's so much more on the recording to be heard and enjoyed. Objectively speaking however, I can see how some people who like a softer, smoothened, less linear sound might prefer other designs. I have a friend in Honolulu who owns an LP12 and a Micro Seiki 5000. He prefers his LP12, I always preferred the 5000. As always, personal tastes prevail. I have no problems with that. :D

As for the new Lamm. I would love to have the Signature series but again, rack space is a problem. :(

LOL! Actually, If I got rid of my utility table and asked Elina for longer PS umbilicals..........

You are a BAD influence Stevie!!!!!!!!!!!!
