statement speakers are just statement priced. They are a marketing prop. It is not so much as if SS amps are as good or not as good as SETs. Even if you assume they are not, a simple old Krell on a good speaker like big apogees should sound very good, or like Mike's system does, rather than how these many new statement speakers sound (and how many, buyers or otherwise, have really heard them). The fact that someone might like SETs and horns more or less is a different point. Even in SETs horns, statement speakers like Magico ultimate or Cessaros are not necessarily the best. They are at best statement prices. Almost no one has heard the Magico ultimate outside a poor Munich demo yet there is a respect for it like it could be the ultimate, purely due to statement price
I have heard the Magico Ultimates, set up with the Vivaldi front end and Avant Garde Amplification at Paragon Jeddah. Did nothing to convert me , into a Magico fan.

Yes you are the only person I know of who heard it outside Munich, and you weren't impressed.

So we can deduce Jazzhead isn't Stereo by another name?

That 6" midrange driver... it has a FOUR INCH voice coil and apparently a very powerful neodymium motor, and is claimed to be linear up to 120 dB. I am not aware of its equivalent anywhere.
!

This is a disadvantage unless the other drivers are matched with a similar sensitivity. If the overall sensitivity is 94 db, there will be a massive disconnect between the 120 db driver and the rest (i am assuming the woofers play catch up, so the crossover will get more complicated to address the disparity between the drivers. Also, Linear at that db between what frequencies?

Most large format horn midrange compression drivers like Radian 850/950, TAD 4001/4003, Altec 288 etc, some JBL are all 4 inch voice coil. With horn loading they go to 105 - 110 db. Tad 4003 is linear from around 600 Hz to 18 kHz and also neodymium. But the best horns have the midbass downwards matching the sensitivity and preferably the impedance too to keep it coherent, and easy to drive with the same amp across both. The more disparate the driver matching, the less the overall ease and the flow.

Ked he isn’t referring to the driver’s sensitivity. He is referencing its max spl output.

Strange post mate , what does it matter if you cant afford the high cost of the wares being offered how does this affect your enjoyment or love of hifi and music , or are you trying to keep up and puff puff just out of breath ..

The M9 could cost 2Billion who cares ....?

Efforts put into speakers that cost more than a house take away from efforts put into “reasonably” priced speakers. I’m not convinced that any of these cost no object speakers with exotic Materials sound any better than ones made from MDF. Remember what our goal is: great sound.

So yes, it does take away from the enjoyment from the hobby.

How does it take away? I don't think I follow...

Jeffery ..!

I just did a needle drop , cant say I'm enjoying my system any less than before M9, so, no, it doesn't take anything away from the hobby IMO ..

Again who cares if Magico only have a 750K model, i must be missing something ? there’s BMW and then there are Ferrari’s , enjoyment can be found anywhere in between and if we wait long enuff that 159K zicronium dome tweeter blessed on mars and brought back by space X will adorn M10 ...!

:)

Jeffrey,

Got it, I understand you now.
But you assume this particular company even WANTS to do a $7500 speaker.
And, from what little I know of audio companies, they don't do single-track development, even the smaller ones. So at any given time, they'll be exploring multiple things at once.
With a a company like Magico, with several different lines, that certainly seems to be the case, with inter-lapping development cycles.

These are small companies with small design departments. If they are designing a $750K speaker, they are not designing a $7,500 speaker.

Chances are they won't be able to do one better than companies specializing at those price points anyway ..

Wilson Master Chronosonic + Subsonics versus Magico M9 + QSub-18s (or maybe future subwoofers more closely matching the design aesthetic of the M9) is quite a battle of the titans!

YG Sonja XV + Dual Invincible Subs would be worth company to those two flagships as well. However, with the few hundred K saves on the YG bundle you can get yourself a nice car with the spare change :)

They are a private company and should be allowed to do whatever it is they want to do and not be judged or criticized for what they do. GM is not designing speakers for us, they’re designing cars instead. Magico wasn’t even around 15 years ago and there are lots of happy music lovers who are now enjoying their fine products. I for one don’t need another company designing a $7500 speaker. I say leave them alone to do whatever they want to do.

That is riding an elephant to catch a grasshopper.

For me, It is a lot more interesting to visit the North pole and South pole system of MikeL's and ddk's.
