American Sound AS-2000 Installations- Far East (Tango)

Yes, I was super steel, super titanium to watch you bounced my GFS on vinyl.

Tang

Uh oh - oh dear, Ked. What have you done.

Tang suggest you spike him with the hottest bird’s eye chilli you can find :)

Bill, I learned from Fremer’s reports to knock on the TT for testing. I thought that knock was to be done with the cartridges

Hi Mike,

Bonzo does a/b things not me. Two full days he with me, I havent seen him finished listening one full song. Looking at him just got me tired.
I like to listen to the whole album. I just enjoy different presentation or flavours each cart give me. The carts I have present very different sound to one another. I dont think that a single arm/cart can give universally best sound to all records.

Tang

LOL hehehe. Oh Ked ;)

Opus1, AtlasSL, Vdh Master Sig., Zyx Univ prem.

This is the cartridge comparison I have been waiting for! Kedar - you might need to stay a few more days . . .

We managed to do that except that the zyx is brand new and not broken in... The other Magico Q7 system with the Aesthetix also had atlas, zyx omega, vdh master Sig strad of the same output.

This way, we can hear these carts straight off the EMT phono, and have superb in-room recordings as well. Thanks to Audiophile Bill for the idea.

although in room recording would also be interesting, we are also hearing the room, the microphone, and microphone position

If we are just comparing cartridges through the EMT or any other phono would it not be best to level the playing field and listen straight out of the phono or preamplifier?

The TASCAM has XLR inputs and a fairly competent ADC - AKM with Velvet Sound. Sure there are better units, perhaps a Lynx Hilo, but I actually like the flexibility of open room recording with the TASCAM's omnidirectional mics as well... They allow us to hear the full system at 24/192. We talked about this as a way to compare our systems on WBF. But, yes, for the purpose of zeroing in on the carts - we should include a pair of Mogami 2549 XLRs with Tang's XMas present.

Edit: Hmm, maybe those are only external mic inputs....

I agree both room and direct from phono is the way to go, but direct does narrow the issues considerably

Also need to agree on a file upload for audio only playback, as you tube though improved has limitation though you miss the visual queue and thunderstorms and dog scratches

I think it’s a tremendous idea, though perhaps Ked needs one for Zero Distortion

I am happy to be a contributor ;)

I provided Tang's previous youtube clips as WAV files here. I figured I'll use Google Drive for distributing any samples I make in the future as well. This was very convenient for downloading to my music server for playback through my DAC in my main system. And although these files underwent youtube compression, I was still able to learn quite a bit about Tang's system. When I played the same track from the same LP on my Kuzma... I could detect at least one or two areas where my system is coming up short. Imagine how useful it'll be once we move beyond Samsung recording devices.

Yes agree on google drive

And listening to other people’s systems is always a learning experience

I have thought of another alternative

USB audio recorder for DSLR

That way u get synchronised vision ...high quality

And high Quality Audio up to 96 or if you pay more 192 kHz was files, and mp3 for you tube

Tang, I hear that Ked has rented an apartment RIGHT next door to your office.

Have no idea why.

I think your stuff will ruin his acoustics.

I have been listening mostly to AS2000 since its arrival. I really enjoy music presented by different carts of mine through the AS2000. Just this past few days I have revisited my other two tts, the 927 and the AF1P, and heard so many a/b/c testings between them with various carts and classical records. I dont think I ever wrote or made description on intrinsic nature of AS2000. So what does it sound like?

It sounds like "nothing." I dont think that it is a tt for everyone and that everone would like its sound. Imo it has the least sound of its own. Even the famous 927 has a consistent character. If you like the powerful energetic drive of 927 at all time look eslewhere. If you like the wide, deep, layering staging of AF1 at all time look else where. The AS2000 doesnot "please" you with these characteristics all the time. To me it is a tt that presents the sound of a recording as that particular vinyl has to offer in a very natural manner. So the two particular examples of features I mentioned can be found on AS2000 when they are in the vinyl. I dont know what David is going to say about what I am about to say but it is true that I often find substandard or even lame sound listening to AS2000 playing vinyls. You will read Bonzo report saying this record sound so much better on this tt than that tt. That record sounds worse with that tt than this tt kind of comment. What AS2000 does consistently is giving a super high resolution sound to all vinyls and play them as they are. Among tts I own, it not only best reveals quality of recording and pressing but also the tt that reveals most differences between cartridges.

Tang :)
