Always listen to your dad. He knows best!
My mum and dad would have insisted on 40 ciggies a day and a liberal dose of Polish vodka.

Where did you get that idea? AFAICT, "herd immunity" was first described in the scientific literature as relating to human illness.

Topley WWC, Wilson GS. The spread of bacterial infection: the problem of herd immunity, J Hyg, 1923, vol. 21 (pg. 243-9)

Not saying you are wrong, but it appears to be an unsubstantiated opinion.

For human medicine yes. Animal health texts which are more than 1000 years old discuss herd immunity (which in that case do not involve vaccines which is the way we talk generally talk about herd immunity) as a natural way to close down the spread of disease amongst and between herds of animals. I’m afraid I don’t have the exact text to hand. Old veterinary publications are unfortunately thin on the ground. The idea of naturally immunizing a herd which has now been extended to human populations in the era of vaccines was really the only way to control diseases. Naturally it doesn’t work with diseases with a high mortality rate but for something like Japanese encephalitis, natural herd immunity within endemic areas is a much more efficient way of protecting pigs, for example, against abortion, which is the primary focus of livestock husbandry and much more effective than man made vaccination. No doubt there are ethical considerations when humans are treated as livestock....

It seems to me that here in the US its all being done ad/hoc or actually half/assed. Some things are closed and others not depending on what city or state you live in. Here in Florida they closed some of the beaches and put some regulations on the restaurants and bars but this is only in selected areas.I don't understand how this can be effective .

It’s not too surprising Elliot considering the jurisdictional power traditionally given to States and even counties within the states. I remember being in disbelief that the rabies policy would be different and inconsistent between counties within a state, let alone between states. Diseases don’t follow administrative boundaries! Europe is waking up to this now albeit a bit late!

You can't take a walk on the Beach but you can go to a gym or even a strip club! They cancelled some poker tournaments at the casino's but the casino and poker rooms are open. This IMO is stupid Period

I agree with you in the general aspect, but in this specific case is disgusting...there's not even a paper with the "cough on your elbow" message, no masks allowed, no gloves allowed, not even gel or alcohol to disinfect your hands. Distance from your coworker: 50-70cm, as always. No possiblity of working from home, when it's perfectly doable in this case. Is like they want you to get the virus too.

The worst of all is that I can only be thankful for how lucky I've been, and find solace in "things could have gone much worse for me", and be at home without being able to do anything about it. Once the first person there is infected (which I hope doesn't happen, but at this rate it is going happen sooner than later), I'm sure this goes to court, but that's the sad thing...having to wait for someone to suffer instead of being cautious from the beginning.

You have my sympathy at this lack of consideration by your employer and government. I could only suggest that you do your best to protect yourself if indeed you venture back to work after 2 weeks. If you’re fit and healthy may be sleep at work to avoid infecting family members until your own infection is over. Then have a long long shower with a change of new clothes, go into the hills for a few days before going home. It has become that easy to spread unfortunately.

Thanks for your advice and being concerned, I'll do my best to not get that virus, period.
Unfortunately, there're no showers or places to sleep at my work, and I can't get out of my home unless is for going to work or buying food (or walking the dog, which I don't have, and don't forget...going to the hairdresser LOL). I can only pray and hope to be able to work from home since march 30th.

Also, please take care of youself, the virus is spreading worldwide at an alarming speed.

I wish Spain takes the same drastic measures, with common sense and discipline is possible to beat the virus...now we only need discipline and common sense :(

Governments: "Everyone needs to keep social distancing, don't get close to anyone else, 6 feet apart"

Also Governments: "We're setting a curfew so that you can only go outside to do things at the same time as everyone else, there won't be any early morning or late night shopping to avoid crowds"

On the lighter side, I was at a record store and in the parking lot it looked like a blind man with the biggest blind person stick ever got into a truck and drove away... Oh it was a social distancing stick!

Way to go ...

By Summer everything should be back to normal...Summer 2021.
The guy who loves the stock markets is reading that plus the Dow down 10% within the first minute of the NYSE's opening belt this morning and an emergency halt to stop the bloodbath and I bet his teeth must be falling by themselves or he's pulling them out ...

"A passenger from South Carolina who disembarked early Sunday morning said he received a letter from the company under his door on Friday advising him that the former passenger had tested positive. He requested his name not be used because he attended the cruise on business and doesn’t want that business jeopardized.

“If we have it, it’s going to spread throughout the country,” he said from his home in South Carolina. “When I say there was no check, there was none whatsoever. I expected us to have some kind of a screening. They didn’t do a single thing. We walked straight off the ship. There wasn’t any check on anyone for anything.”

He said he is going to try to get tested as soon as possible.

MSC said no one on board has symptoms of the disease.

“We worked closely with the Health Authorities in Canada, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and PortMiami and followed all protocols as required,” said MSC Cruises spokesperson Alyssa Goldfarb via email. “MSC Meraviglia received clearance after health authorities reviewed all the necessary documentation regarding the health of passengers and crew on board today and throughout the cruise.”

But a spokesperson for PortMiami, Andria Muniz-Amador, said the Port Director Juan Kuryla and Mayor Carlos Gimenez’s office “are not aware of any cruise passenger testing positive of COVID-19,” and referred questions to the Florida Health Department.

The CDC did not respond to multiple requests for comment. The Florida Health Department said it was not notified by the CDC of the former passenger’s positive test result."

_____

No kidding!

Greece had reductions, Italy had a lot of increases today. To draw cause and effect with the strict measures, we will have to wait at least a month to find out.

We can't afford those bean counters either.

So, Boris may deny it now because it sounds like social darwinism, but herd immunity must be the plan. This can be the only reason why we're the outlier on: no social distancing, no schools shut, and no health workers screening.

What a judgement call.

It's interesting how "herd immunity" is being employed as it is a term that originated in veterinary medicine and now we are treating people like animals...

People are no more important than animals, often time less important.

Humans are an animal species.

So yes, humans..."herd immunity" ... from wiki the term is correct (socially distinguish and universally accepted).

Remember too; nobody knows Coronavirus exactly ... "uncharted territory".
There are various strains, waves, ... no time table as to when the end is near or not.
First it has to follow its course, its spread, in waves, with all the measures man is taking or not, and nobody can predict the future and time the markets ...
