hpsoundings II

Golf outings, vacations, etc. I also don’t think it’s any accident that lots of pharmaceutical salespeople are women. And not your frumpy variety either-I’m talking good looking sexy women who are much more likely to get the time and attention of male doctors, generals, and admirals.

Some docs have all the luck. Maybe I should pretend to be in practice again. Sort of like the nurse fantasy. A lot of real nurses look like stevedore feminists in clodhoppers.

Frantz-How are we going to solve anything here and make the audio world a better place? The last time this thread was trotted out, I said I wish the current distribution model was thrown out and we could all buy our gear at the prices manufacturers charge the dealers. However, that would put all dealers out of business (and many of them have gone under for other reasons) and you would have no place to go and hear gear and no help to get it to your house and set up according to the way the manufacturer wants it set up.

The other thread ended up the same way this one will-people taking pot shots at reviewers and saying they are all crooked and getting rich off of selling their gear at higher prices than what they paid for it while lamenting that we non-reviewers can’t buy gear at accommodation prices. Not to mention some bruised feelings along the way. I’m surprised we are going down this dirt road again to tell you the truth. We damn sure didn’t “fix” anything last time. The only thing different this time around is we have a few more hardcore cynics that are throwing hardballs at reviewers than we did the last time.

Discussions mep that is all that there is to it . . We discuss and idea may come from these discussions .. Do you suggest that we don't discuss anything then ... I am not sure there two people on this forum with the exact same system .. Shouldn't we discuss the gear either or Room Treatments or Amplifiers or Music? .. No!! From discussions come ideas .. and that is what we want ... Discuss we must it keeps ideas coming ... As for the hardball, if any, that is part and parcels of being a public figure I guess. if you are a critic which what a reviewer is or should be there comes a time when you own works and method will be criticized .. Comes with the territory , I guess. If there is a negative it must be addressed and the person who uttered called for it and come forth to prove his assertion. If the post is disrespectful it must addressed as well. I am all for debate as long as it is respectful and logical...

Frantz-All I'm saying is that we tried this topic before, it ended up nowhere, and now it's becoming even more mean-spirited than the first time. If new angles aren't brought up to discuss than were brought up the first time, it seems futile to me.

Really Doc? How come every doctor’s office I visit is decorated in Early Pharmaceutical Salesman? Calendars, clocks, soap dispensers, knick-knacks, they all have some drug name on them. The medical profession has been riddled with remuneration for the number of prescriptions written for certain drugs. Golf outings, vacations, etc. I also don’t think it’s any accident that lots of pharmaceutical salespeople are women. And not your frumpy variety either-I’m talking good looking sexy women who are much more likely to get the time and attention of male doctors, generals, and admirals.

Mark

you are so out of line and so misinformed with that comment. End of story. I retired almost 6 years ago and at that time the laws to which jazdoc was referring were in place. And he is also correct that the days of professional courtesy are long gone. At the very most one's colleagues might waive the office copay and that's it

Agreed completely, Steve. Most all "freebies" have been gone for years. We can get taken out to dinner as long as we watch a PowerPoint presentation about a relevant topic and can't take spouses (unless we pay for them).

Steve-I don’t know about the West Coast, but what I said about doctor’s offices being decorated in Early Pharmaceutical Salesman is true in Indiana. Propaganda for every type of medicine is prevalent all over their offices. It really offended me that even the soap dispenser in the bathroom came from a drug company. They don’t miss a shot. I’m not making this stuff up, so I don’t know why you are telling me I’m misinformed. Notice I didn’t touch on the aspect of doctor’s not being able to provide “professional courtesy” treatment to each other anymore because I know nothing about that.

As for drug companies rewarding doctors for prescribing their drugs, here is one example:

http://www.propublica.org/article/lawsuits-say-pharma-illegally-paid-doctors-to-push-their-drugs

And here is the relevant part of the story from the above link:

"But a series of lawsuits brought by former employees of those companies allege the money often was used for illegal purposes — financially rewarding doctors for prescribing their brand-name medications."

And the greater point here is that all doctor's aren't on the take from drug companies anymore than all reviewers are crooked. There are bad apples in every barrel.

I'm stunned Mark. In California it just doesn't occur. I haven't seen any thing gratis in my office for close to 10 years

I'd have to interject Steve, when you get into the field of Research, it's a whole different ballgame!

But presumably you're not actually prescribing what you're being funded for...

Am I getting this right? This thread was never about HP (Harry Pearson) and his positions/views/reviews/new website ?

It deserves perhaps to die just like the other one ...

...Not to kill the thread, but to properly set her down on the tracks.

Harry Pearson, the man behind the curtain, with all his good music advices over the years, and one of the guru pioneers of our hobby. ...The Abso!ute Sound ... Now with his own web ...

Don't get me started ....:)

Some of the best threads are the ones meandering back and forth , eventually it will feel like an afternoon at cheers ...:).

With all the strong opinions here, may be someone should start a thread on how the industry should REALLY be run. You have at least one interested manufacturer lurking here......

And speakers too. ;)

I got a message for the link to HP's posting on his new site. I read it and it struck me as a long tedious nearly pointless rambling message about why high end audio is valuable. Sounded more like an advertisement for industry in trouble trying to justify itself than anything that could possibly interest me. If the rest of them are going to be like that I won't even bother to read them. The comments by contributors were equally inane. (I didn't see any reason to post one.) As I pointed out in another thread to me Fremer and Pearson are two peas in a pod.

Frantz,

Perhaps, the vbulletin software could help this thread drift syndrome.

Does vbulletin offer the option to incorporate the OP at the top of each thread page load? This might keep things on track, if that is a desired objective.

I thought it would be nice to have this thread to alert members to reviews of gear and music that might be of interest. At least one member availed himself of the box set of of Wilma Cozart-Fnes' work. This is much nore efficient IMO than starting a thread every time something of interest appears.
HP is obviously a lightening rod for things that are positive or negative about the highend. Such discussions are inevitable.
Those who are offended or unimpressed should feel free to look elsewhere (another thread)for entertainment. Or stay and continue to be aggravated.
Goodnight Teresa.
