LampizatOr Horizon - Tube Rolling Paradise

The Tak 274B rectifier is around $1400. I saw others including PSvane for a fraction of the cost. Does anyone have any experience with other 274B tubes? Can you explain the differences other than $1300 dollars more.

I haven’t yet heard the Horizon, a friend is hopefully going to get his in May, very much looking forward. Having said that, I’ve heard the Takatsuki in several constellations, and while it’s all system dependent and generalizations aren’t more than just that, it has transpired to me as one of the great rectifiers across all those comparisons. Not the one and only. But one out of a small handful that I’d put on my list rolling rectifiers. It’s always struck me that the one application it’ll fit like the proverbial glove is in conjunction with the Takatsuki 300Bs, though. And yes, it’s not cheap.

Greetings from Switzerland, David.

So I did just order a 4 piece set of Tung Sol Kt 170 (new) and a pair of Thomson CSF 5687 (used, "measuring like new") for my Horizon (to be delivered in September, probably) for reasonable prices.

What kind of adaptors will I need if any?

Thanks for help
Charlie

No adapter for KT170 and 5687 to 6SN7 (wooaudio or Chinese ones)

Make sure you get a Takatsuki 274B rectifier. I can't stop listening to mine

What would be the lifecycle? 1-2 years?
I´m not ready for that kind of money burning just yet.
Maybe later this year though...

In a DAC? Why should it be so short? Unless the reservoir capacitor exceeds 4µF (would have to ask Lukasz)?

I don´t know, I was actually asking. I know that the other tubes are driven well below there specifications and Lucas claimed a life span of 20 years for them - but what about the rectifier tube which is working full power all the time? Or is it not?
( I cannot follow your technical remark about the capacitor as I´m incompetent, sorry.)

The Takatsuki, as far as I know, is a straight copy of the legendary Western Electric, with the exception of using thicker glass. The specification for the WE 274b reads the reservoir capacitor to be used must not exceed 4µF. While it’s otherwise interchangeable with 5U4G (maximum reservoir capacitor 40µF), using 274b with a larger than specified reservoir capacitor may drastically shorten its lifespan.

and:

But really, best to ask Lukasz! I seem to remember him saying it’s not a problem in e.g. the Golden Gate and Pacific.

I wanted to formally announce in this thread, to all those interested--we will indeed have a Horizon DAC at AXPONA this month in a fabulous statement room consisting of the following:

for a reference the tak does not sound like a nos 274b
looks close not sound
the most has more air and better stage
the tak less air more weight
ask rau to confirm I don’t own a H dac yet

Hm - wondering if 6p3s power beam tetrode would work as its replacement for 5881/6L6 and might be interesting to play them with Melz and 5c3s...
