LampizatOr Horizon - Tube Rolling Paradise

Last night I decided that if the Horizon was going to take several weeks to burn in I might as well put in the KT170s to let them burn in as well. They don't/won't need as long a burn in time but swapping them in would give me a chance to assess their sound since the Horizon sound hadn't been changing much.

Well, the sound difference was dramatic. Much better depth and detail. It sounded like I accelerated the burn in process (not that it is complete).

It really leads me to wonder if the KT88s are a good fit for the Horizon given how well the KT170s sound.

Of course, this is all subject to change...

Same experience. KT170 is way much better then the KR KT88.

The obvious advantage of the KT-170 is that is new tube easily available. They are about $200 each now although you will find them priced much higher at some sources like VIVA tubes. Why fight trying to find unobtanium tubes (unless they are miraculous?). It also seems very curious to me that everyone seems to be ignoring the 6NP6 which Lukasz said in his tube post #44 was his second favorite tube (which can be had for $25/pair) behind the 6900 which flamed out very quickly (at $800/pair). Would someone please try these?

Marty, it is not that simple to just “try” a 6N6P. They require an adapter which is not easy to find. I think the 6N6P pin out is the same as the 6DJ8 which is a more common tube. This all needs to be figured out first.

I have not heard anything better than the KT170. I started with KR KT88 which were beautiful. I’m fact I bought a back up set but once I heard the KT-170 the search was over. So also a similar epiphany with the change in rectifier from KR5u4g to tak 274 B as well as from 6900 to 5687 Thomson CSF
As David states and I have as well many times that the tube changes typically produce small changes. That is why Lukasz said pick what you like and stick with it However when you put the KT170 in everyone’s ears light up

The search never ends. It just gets temporarily paused when you find something you like.

I really feel it has for me. I just want to enjoy the music with what I like now and I am eternally happy. I have stated that the only tube I am interested in is if and when Western Electric goes back into tube production.....I am interested in a current version of their fabled 274B although the Tak is simply mind boggling

You are not a tube roller by nature so that makes sense. The fact that I have boxes and boxes of tubes waiting to be used indicates that I am.

Then wouldn't this work?
