Yes I recall Frank the CD Transport "Guru" at Theta was the first to implement his "Opti-Gue"(sic)! for application to the Optical lead connectors before insertion. I've still got some somewhere I think.
MPS-X is nice. Network acoustics tempus switch and muon pro filter also really nice and amazing. Anything foundational (server streamer dac) I enjoy working on more for some odd reason. Recently about to mess around with speaker cables so that should be fun!
Are there any tricks to disconnecting the MPS-X Plink cable from the MPS-8? Mine was stuck in very tight, and although I was very careful to pull straight back, I still managed to break the tip off, and can't remove it. Is the optical gel a lubricant to make it easier to insert or remove the Plink cable?
I can’t imagine they’ve changed the cables connections.
previously, you would push in on the connector and turn it left or right until it would unlock and then pull away from the equipment.

Thanks - I might have pressed it in too hard the first time I connected it. I can't remove the broken tip now, so I'm using the AES input. I'll probably need to ship it back to PBD to get the tip removed.

It has been a rough ride with the MPS-X. I did read the manual carefully but I have had a couple of problems that might have been prevented with better instructions in the manual. So no, I am not mad at myself because I did carefully follow all of the instructions in the manual.
I'm also having problems with songs stuttering or stopping abruptly. It might be caused by my internet service, but it seems like the MPS-X should have enough internal buffering to prevent this. I have this problem streaming Qobuz with both BubbleUPnP/Android and JPLAY/Apple.
I'm going to try a Grimm MU2 to see if I get the same problems.

Hello All,
I've just acquired a MPD8 Dac, fantastic peace of gear!
The firmware version of my MPD-8 shows 021 - 011.
Is this the latest version or do I need to upgrade ?
The reason I am asking is that I saw from the website that the current version is 19.
does your pre-amp sound better with higher, or lower source signal level input?
the playback designs dac/player allow users to select 5 different output level from -6dB to 0dB to +6dB
which output level sounds best with your pre-amp and the whole system?
Been running almost 24/7 with a streaming source. A lot of sonic changes since it was taken B-N-O-O-T-B. Now, the bass is like it's almost too much, even with the bass-shy Sony SS-M9EDs.
I am still undecided which is better - the player on variable output and the pass labs XP20 pre-amp at max volume, or the player on 0dB fixed output and the pre-amp at around the 40/50s vol level. I also tried the player at -6dB fixed output and pushing XP20 up another 10 clicks. They all have very different spectral/soundstaging presentation!
Just got news that the MPD-8 will get a few upgrade this September.
First is the analogue stage, which will get an all new circuit design. This is due to certain components in the current analogue stage going to be out of production soon. PBD is taking this opportunity to change/improve the analogue stage.
Secondly, PBD will add 2 analogue inputs into the MPD-8, which then will be renamed MPD-8AI. One set of XLR and one RCA input will be added.
Retail price will be higher because of the more expensive production costs.
