Would be interested to hear your thoughts on the Pink Faun + Playback combination
Just received the latest MPD-8 with upgraded analog output stage, very happy camper. Have a DAC that is twice the price in the house and I prefer the Playback.
First is the analogue stage, which will get an all new circuit design. This is due to certain components in the current analogue stage going to be out of production soon. PBD is taking this opportunity to change/improve the analogue stage.
Secondly, PBD will add 2 analogue inputs into the MPD-8, which then will be renamed MPD-8AI. One set of XLR and one RCA input will be added.
From the PBD website it looks like only the second change you described happened and that the circuits are identical between the original MPD-8 and the new AI version.
Does anyone know the cost to upgrade an older version to the newer?

looks like Andreas caught us by surprise, and except for the add of the extra analogue inputs, he didn't do nuthin' to improve the dac's output circuits at all. dCS and Emmylabby be damned. PB's analogue output are already optimized. more tinkering will only makes the sound worse! so there, haha! so for anyone not requiring the extra analogue inputs to be mounted on the dac, and will continue to use their pre-amps in resident, there is no need to "upgrade to" the A.i version at all.

around the last week of Oct, i will head up north to attend the hifi show in kuala lumpur, where the newly appointed dealer for PB will be exhibiting the pink faun + the mpd-ai combination. in between will be the usb-x4.
my mps-8 took more than 800 hours (via a streamer) to sound "acceptable".
I can say that the Nagra streamer works with the MPD-8 over Plink and it is exceptional, particularly if you have a classic PSU for the streamer.
I did try the EMM NS1 with a Nagra dac and it did not work over plink, so I assume the same is true for the MPD8 (in other words Nagra link and Plink are the same thing).

Andreas confirmed there are minor updates because older components were discontinued and some tweaks he had in mind since the original design (and that also required a few software changes) but new and old MPD8s should perform similarly .
