Sonus Faber Aida vs. Wilson XLF (with the MBL 101 Extreme thrown-in for fun)

Since the MBLs rely so much on omnidirectional sound, can it be that un-tuned room conditions at a show (with limited time for fine adjustment, & frankly bad acoustical properties to begin with) will degrade their sound more than that of directional speakers?

Lee

I have always said the MBLs will excite every room problem :(

Myles,

Does this include RMAF?

If it does, I guess my hearing is pretty bad. But then again, we all have our own opinion of what is good given the room, what was playing, and where one was sitting during the demo.

Gordon

Yes sorry to say :(

The 101 Extreme...a silly mm longer; I am dating myself:eek:

Maybe the guys were not actually hearing double, but a first-time experience with stereo...DEV's everyday stereo experience, SUPER!

Cheers!

Myles,

Does that mean you don't like RMAF or didn't like the MBL demos or both?

I have never heard them at any show period so I can not comment but in general what you write is your own opinion and very subjective, as is mine or anyone elses.

Curious, what speakers do you find to be your cup of tea and your referrence and why? Are you still using the Martin-Logan Summit X? and is this your current listening space?

I was reading your "Listening habbits" and truely confusing.

Myles,

Both :) But I must add this proviso. I would like to hear the speakers with analog. I'm hard pressed to like any system at a show that uses digital. Usually with a few exception, it's how long do I need to stay in the room to be polite :( And if it's my disc on their machine, I'm stuck for one cut. So always choose a short one first.

What confusing about my listening habits?

Hi ALF, too funny :D

Looks like a system right up my alley. Probably changes a lot, though, since Myles is a reviewer.

Well firstly you did not answer my questions prior to that statement so I'll ask again;

"WHAT IS CONFUSING ABOUT YOUR LISTENING HABITS"

What you are suggesting in refference to the MBL's just isn't adding up because when I read what you have written "Listening Habit's" partially reflects what a person who enjoys listening to MBL's would convey. ;)

Saying you never heard them sound good at a show BTW is my experience. I have heard them with analogue. It's a significant drive but I want to give them another chance. I'll report back to you sometime in May. I got email of two events in MAy from the dealer.

That's why I'm stopping at Greg's store on the way to the CAF to hear the MBLs properly set up with an analog source. :)

OK yes, I'm still using the Summit-Xs. Unlike other reviewers, I don't change my equipment like underwear :) I tend to listen and then stick with something long term eg. my ART preamp for 12 years. And yes, it is my current space, not showing room Rx though.

The reason I like the MLs is that they do what very few other speakers can do: low level resolution, ambience retrieval, transparency and microdynamics. With tape, they image like a son-of-a-gun and the musicians appear to playing in the room on the best jazz tapes. They are to my ears very uncolored and in my room, the transition from panel to woofer is darn good. 14 K isn't pocket change but I feel they are the steal of the speaker world because they do so many things well and little badly. In fact, while not as good as a dynamic speaker, the Summit-Xs acquit themselves quite well even in the area of microdynamics. Oh yes, I've never heard the ML sound good at a show either :)

Myles,

Today I am disagreeing a lot :). One of the best sounds I ever heard was a pair of the old Martin Logan Monoliths in an all Mark Levinson system (ML31.5 -30.5 -380s -20.5 or 20.6) all connected using Transparent Reference XL cables (their top at that time) at a show in London. It was the first time I could listen to a really great sound from a digital based system. Until that day I would swear that digital could not sound so good.

United Home Audio in Annapolis Junction. Greg Beron has posted here, esp in the tape forum where he is one of the leading movers and shakers right now in the R2R world.

I thought that was who you were refering to but I thought he was waiting for his new MK2's to arrive and then they will need many hours for break-in so I don't know how that's going to properly happen.
His speakers being driven with MBL electronics, you know how you feel about analog sources well that's how I feel about my Vac gear in comparison. :)

You must be joking ! ...

I am with Myles with it and this is my main problem with the MBL and actually every omni I have heard and that includes those which predated the MBL amongst them the Shaninian Obleisk of yore ... It is seductive and some may like it and as in this case some don't.
